Colleverde Living Via Crucis

A night of faith at the gates of Rome

In the heart of the Roman province, along the Via Nomentana, the Colleverde neighborhood of Guidonia Montecelio experiences one of the most intense moments of Holy Week each year. The Living Via Crucis is not merely a procession: it is a true itinerant sacred play, where residential streets become the stage and neighbors become actors in the Passion of Christ.

The event is set for the evening of Good Friday, when the neighborhood lights dim and silence replaces the traffic of the Nomentana. It is an event deeply rooted in the social fabric of Colleverde, capable of attracting not only parishioners but also curious visitors and families from the nearby towns of the Tiburtine territory.

The route of the representation

Everything begins in front of the Church of San Remigio, where the Flagellation of Christ is staged. From there, the procession sets off through the neighborhood streets, all named after Italian mountains: via Monte Grappa, via Monte Bianco, via Monte Gran Paradiso, and back to via Monte Bianco. Each station of the Via Crucis is performed live, accompanied by readings and hymns that mark the procession's progress.

The climax occurs in Piazza Colleverde, the civic and religious heart of the neighborhood, where the Crucifixion scene is set up. It is here that the performance reaches its peak emotional intensity, aided by stage effects and a lighting system designed for the occasion.

A community that becomes a spectacle

The credit for the organization goes to the Ar.Co. - Artisti di Colleverde association, chaired by Anna Maria Gabrielli, which collaborates with the San Remigio Parish. The tradition was born when the parish priest was Father Riccardo Bockowski and has taken increasingly deep roots in the neighborhood over the years, becoming a highly anticipated event for all of Colleverde.

Each edition brings together over thirty performers, all neighborhood volunteers, who share the roles of the Passion: Jesus, Mary, Pontius Pilate, Veronica, centurions, scribes, and the people. They are joined by those working behind the scenes: those who sew and adapt period costumes, those who manage special effects, and those who handle route safety. Over the years, the local Scout group and the Unitalsi Group, which writes the meditations read along the stations, have also participated.

The context: Guidonia Montecelio and the traditions of Lazio

Guidonia Montecelio is one of the most populous municipalities in Lazio and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, a few kilometers from Tivoli and its UNESCO World Heritage villas. Colleverde is one of its most vibrant districts, developed along the Nomentana axis towards the capital.

The Living Via Crucis is part of a deeply felt tradition in Lazio, that of the Good Friday sacred representations, which counts dozens of events across the villages of the Castelli Romani, Sabina, and the Aniene Valley. Here, however, the scale is intentionally neighborhood-focused: no mass tourism numbers, but an intimate and direct participation where the spectators know the performers.

What to expect

First-time attendees are struck above all by the atmosphere: the streets closed to traffic, the torches, the meticulously detailed costumes, and the hushed silence of the audience following the procession on foot. It is not a show designed for mass tourism, but a civic and religious rite that renews the bond between the parish and the neighborhood every year.

Admission is free and participation is open to everyone, believers and non-believers alike. It is recommended to arrive a little early in front of the church to witness the opening scene and then follow the procession along the entire route to the square.
