San Gabriele Festival

A neighborhood tradition nearly sixty years in the making

The San Gabriele Festival is one of the most cherished events in the popular calendar of Monterotondo, a large town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital overlooking the Tiber Valley, at the gates of Sabina. Organized by the Gesù Operaio parish on Via Piave, the festival traditionally takes place on the weekend closest to the Saint's liturgical feast day, September 13th. Having reached its 59th edition in 2025, the event dates back to the late 1960s, when the neighborhood surrounding the parish was first taking shape.

The return from summer

Unlike typical summer fairs, the San Gabriele Festival holds a specific significance in the rhythm of life in Monterotondo: it arrives just as the town repopulates after the holidays and schools are about to reopen. It is the festival of the 'return,' a time when the neighborhood reconnects, families meet again in the church square, and parish activities resume. For many locals, it is an appointment that marks the end of summer more than any date on the calendar.

Faith and community

The heart of the event remains religious. The program spans several days, alternating Eucharistic celebrations, moments of communal prayer, and events dedicated to the faithful, often with the participation of the Monterotondo pastoral zone of the Suburban Diocese of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto. Surrounding this core is the social aspect, managed by parish volunteers and youth groups.

San Gabriele dell'Addolorata

The figure celebrated is San Gabriele dell'Addolorata, a young Passionist religious who died at just twenty-four years old in 1862 and was proclaimed the patron saint of Italian Catholic youth. His devotion is deeply rooted in Central Italy and found a natural home in Monterotondo, within a parish dedicated to labor and born in a working-class context: the young, simple Saint, close to daily life, has become an emotional touchstone for generations of the neighborhood.

Monterotondo, the Eretine capital

With over forty thousand inhabitants, Monterotondo is one of the most populous municipalities in the province of Rome. The historic center, dominated by Palazzo Orsini-Barberini and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena, preserves the medieval layout of the village, while the lower part of the town and Monterotondo Scalo reflect twentieth-century growth along the railway. The local calendar is rich in popular traditions, from the patronal feast to neighborhood celebrations: the San Gabriele Festival occupies the spot of the 'September festival,' symbolically closing the season of outdoor events.

Attending the festival

Participation is free and open for all celebrations and community events; any food services are managed by volunteers at popular prices, with proceeds supporting parish activities. It is a neighborhood festival in the truest sense: no large-scale production, but an entirely volunteer-led organization that has held the Via Piave community together for nearly sixty years.
