About Ciammella Festival

The Ciammella Festival is one of the most deeply rooted folk celebrations of the Marsica summer. Every August, Scurcola Marsicana (Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) comes alive with folk floats, costumed processions, music, and the aroma of fresh bread. The heart of the event is the ciammella, a traditional sweet ring-shaped pastry that, along with wine poured from the Fontana della Venere, is offered to residents and visitors as a symbol of conviviality, memory, and rural heritage. A true immersion into the village's traditions, between Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza della Venere.

The Ciammella Festival in Scurcola Marsicana

The Ciammella Festival is a staple of the summer season in the town of Scurcola Marsicana, a village in the Marsica area of the Province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Reaching its 47th edition in 2025, the event is one of the oldest and most cherished in the local calendar, drawing hundreds of visitors from across the Marsica region and neighboring towns every year.

The ciammella, symbol of the festival

The undisputed star is the ciammella, a traditional ring-shaped pastry prepared according to ancient recipes passed down through generations. It is more than just a baked good: it is a symbol of celebration, unity, and memory, reflecting the region's rural culture. During the festival, the ciammelle are distributed along with wine flowing from the historic Fontana della Venere in Piazza della Venere, a gesture of hospitality that remains the most anticipated moment of the day.

Folk floats and the costumed procession

The afternoon begins with the gathering of folk floats in Piazza Garibaldi, followed by a parade through the village streets. The carefully decorated floats recreate ancient workshops and trades once found in the village, while locals march in traditional period costumes. Folk music and groups accompany the procession to Piazza della Venere, creating a festive and convivial atmosphere that involves the entire community.

Gastronomy and evening in the square

In the evening, food stalls open, serving traditional Abruzzese specialties, while the celebration continues with live music and dancing under the stars. Past editions have also featured performances by the Venturini choir in Piazza della Venere.

A village rich in history

Scurcola Marsicana is a charming village, famously linked to the Battle of Tagliacozzo in 1268 and dominated by castle ruins and local historical heritage. The Ciammella Festival is one of the best opportunities to discover the town, its traditions, and its hospitality during a summer in Marsica filled with folk events.
