Two days of faith and tradition in the Marsican village of the Simbruini Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Cappadocia, a small town in the Marsica area of the L'Aquila province (Abruzzo), the heart of summer coincides with the Ferragosto processions: local sources unanimously describe them as the two most important events of the year for the village. Nestled at approximately 1,100 meters above sea level, at the gateway to the Simbruini Mountains Regional Nature Park, the village fills during these days with devotees, tourists, and emigrants who return to their hometown specifically to attend.
On Ferragosto, the community gathers for the procession in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Anthony. The solemnity of the Assumption, a feast deeply rooted throughout Italy, takes on the intimate and heartfelt character of mountain devotion here: the statues travel through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the faithful, the sound of church bells, and music, set against the backdrop of the village's stone houses.
The following day features the procession dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint traditionally invoked as a protector against epidemics. This is the most evocative and identity-defining moment of the feast: by ancient custom, the women of the village walk dressed in black beside the statue of the Madonna, who is also draped in black as a sign of mourning and participation in her sorrow. This rite gives the day a solemn and moving atmosphere, quite distinct from the festive spirit of the previous day.
Surrounding the religious events, the Pro Loco of Cappadocia and the community organize civil festivities that enliven both evenings: dancing, traditional songs, cultural initiatives, and food and wine events featuring products from the mountain territory. The squares and alleys of the village become meeting places for entire families, fostering a conviviality that unites residents and visitors alike.
A visit to Cappadocia is also an opportunity to explore a territory of great natural and historical charm, with its hamlets of Petrella Liri, Verrecchie, and Camporotondo, the famous caves (the Beatrice Cenci Cave and the Cola Cave), and the hiking trails of the Simbruini range. The Ferragosto in Cappadocia is thus a blend of faith, popular tradition, and love for the Abruzzo mountains.
The 2026 edition of the Ferragosto processions in Cappadocia has not yet been officially announced by the organizers. Based on the established tradition of the Marsican village, the celebrations should return in mid-August with the procession of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Anthony and, the following day, that of Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Roch. The civil program and schedules will be released by the Pro Loco of Cappadocia and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event.
Cappadocia is located in western Marsica, in the province of L'Aquila, about 70 km from the regional capital and not far from Avezzano. By car, it can be reached via the A24/A25 motorway (Carsoli-Oricola or Avezzano exit), continuing along the local roads toward the Liri Valley and the Simbruini Mountains.
The celebrations traditionally take place on August 15th (Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Anthony) and August 16th (Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Roch). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.

As this is a mountain village at over 1,000 meters, we recommend clothing suitable for cool evenings and comfortable shoes for the stone-paved streets of the historic center.
