The traveling living nativity in the Arab-style village of Sambuca di Sicilia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of winter, the town of Sambuca di Sicilia, in the province of Agrigento, hosts Christmas Zabut, a traveling living nativity that draws visitors from all over Sicily every year. The event transforms the historic center of the village into a small open-air Bethlehem, where dozens of costumed performers bring nativity scenes and ancient rural trades to life.
Sambuca di Sicilia owes its charm to its Arab roots: the name "Zabut" itself, from which the event takes its title, dates back to the era when the Arabs founded the village and built a castle there. Voted Borgo dei Borghi in 2016 and included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town offers a perfect scenic backdrop with its maze of narrow streets, courtyards, "ntrate" (entrances), and arches. The route winds through the ancient heart of the town, from the Arab quarter to the main streets and central squares.
The nativity is a traveling experience: groups of visitors are guided along a route lasting about an hour, during which they witness numerous acted scenes. Carpenters, blacksmiths, washerwomen, shepherds, street vendors, and farmers re-enact life from the past, while symbolic figures embody universal values such as peace, love, and tolerance. The most elaborate editions have involved over a hundred performers and about twenty scenes, accompanied by music, Christmas carols, and tastings of local products.
Christmas Zabut is much more than a performance: it is a collective ritual that involves the entire Sambuca community. The event is organized by the IST Association of Calogero Maggio together with the Perla Imperiale Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Sambuca di Sicilia and the support of the "Borghi piรน belli d'Italia" network. Tastings of typical local products along the way complete an experience that combines spirituality, folklore, and gastronomy in one of the most evocative locations in Western Sicily.
The 2026 edition of Christmas Zabut, the traveling living nativity of Sambuca di Sicilia, does not yet have official dates: the organizers have announced that the program will be published shortly. In keeping with tradition, the event is expected to take place in the village's historic center during the Christmas season, featuring the usual route through nativity scenes, ancient crafts, and tastings of local products. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Sambuca di Sicilia is located in the province of Agrigento, in Western Sicily. By car, the most convenient exit is from the state road connecting Sciacca and Menfi to the hinterland; the village is about an hour from Agrigento and a little more from Palermo. The reference railway stations are those on the Agrigento coast, from which you can continue by car or by bus.
The event takes place during the Christmas season, generally in the last days of December. The traveling route lasts about an hour.
Access is usually free. For updated information on dates and times, please contact the organizers or the Municipality of Sambuca di Sicilia (tel. +39 0925 940200).
