Christmas lights up the narrow streets of the ancient village of Castro

Every year, with the arrival of December, the historic center of Castro dresses up for the holidays and becomes the stage for Christmas in the Village, the Christmas festival promoted by the Municipality of Castro. Perched on the Adriatic coast of Salento, in the province of Lecce, this small village overlooking the sea is one of the most charming in Puglia: its narrow alleys, small squares, and the walls surrounding the Aragonese Castle transform into a true open-air nativity scene, illuminated by warm lights and carefully curated decorations.
The heart of the event is the idea of bringing the entire village to life: not a single stage, but a free path through the streets of the historic center, where every corner hosts something special. The protagonists are the artisan markets, with stalls featuring local craftsmen offering handmade items, Christmas decorations, and typical local products. Accompanying visitors are street performers with fire shows and clowning, musical performances, and the traditional Pastorale, which recalls the popular and religious dimension of the Salento Christmas.
There is also an area dedicated to street food, with local gastronomic specialties, while the most awaited moment is the lighting of the alleys: when the lights turn on at dusk, the village glows and the holiday season officially begins. The municipal project "Adopt an Alley" also involves residents and businesses in the decorative lighting of the streets, making every corner of the town part of the scenery.
In addition to the evenings in the village, the Christmas program in Castro includes exhibitions of artistic nativity scenes hosted in iconic locations such as the Aragonese Castle, moments dedicated to children like the Saint Lucy festival with the toy fair, the arrival of Santa Claus, and appointments that continue until Epiphany. The calendar, spread over several days between December and early January, allows you to discover the village on different occasions throughout the holidays.
Christmas in the Village is the ideal opportunity to visit Castro in the cold season, away from the summer crowds, and to experience the authentic atmosphere of a seaside village in lower Salento. Between craftsmanship, popular traditions, and the charm of the Aragonese Castle, the event combines the magic of Christmas with the historical and landscape heritage of one of the most characteristic towns in the province of Lecce.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Christmas in the Village have not yet been announced. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Castro, is traditionally held in December and brings the historic center of the village to life with artisan markets, street performances, the Pastorale, and the lighting of the alleys.
The calendar and detailed program will be published on the official channels of the Municipality of Castro closer to the holidays. This page will be updated as soon as information becomes available.
