The Kairos Living Nativity and artistic nativity scenes in the village of Mineo
Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the village of Mineo, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, dresses up for the holidays and becomes one of the most beloved living nativity scenes in Eastern Sicily. The Christmas in Mineo event transforms the alleys, courtyards, and arches of the historic center into a grand open-air nativity, where Christian tradition intertwines with the town's rural and artisanal heritage.
The heart of the event is the Living Nativity set up by the Circolo Santa Agrippina in the evocative Vico Gueli, a maze of historic streets in the district of the same name. The 2025/2026 edition, titled Kairos โ The Opportune Time, reflects on the Greek concept of kairรณs, the propitious moment as opposed to chrรณnos, or chronological time. The setting reconstructs late 19th-century Sicily: costumed actors bring ancient trades to life, such as the water-jar maker (quartararo), the carter, and the shepherd, while the Nativity scene is hosted at the 17th-century church of Santa Caterina.
Alongside the living nativity, the route is enriched by about twenty artistic nativity scenes scattered throughout the narrow streets of the historic center, created by Sicilian artisans and master nativity makers. There is also Santa's House, a favorite for children, and a Christmas market featuring local products and crafts, for which the Municipality publishes an annual call for exhibitors.
Along the route, a food area allows visitors to savor local culinary specialties: cavateddi, fresh ricotta, fritters, and other traditional dishes. The atmosphere is completed by Christmas carols, the sound of bagpipes, and street theater performances that accompany visitors through the village alleys.
Now in its 25th edition, the event confirms Mineo as one of the most evocative "nativity villages" in the province of Catania. The festival concludes on Epiphany, January 6th, with the arrival of the Magi and the Befana, in a festive finale that involves the entire community.
The 25th edition of Christmas in Mineo took place between December 25, 2025, and January 6, 2026, with openings on December 25, 26, and 28, and January 4 and 6, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The Kairos Living Nativity animated Vico Gueli with costumed actors and ancient Sicilian trades, while about twenty artistic nativity scenes dotted the village alleys. The event concluded on Epiphany with the arrival of the Magi and the Befana.
Mineo can be reached by car via the SS417 Catania-Gela road, exiting towards the town center; the village is about an hour from the provincial capital, Catania. The nearest train station is in Catania, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The Living Nativity is open from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM on event days. The entrance fee is 3.00 euros per person. For groups, parishes, and organized visits, it is recommended to contact the organizers in advance.
