The Santa Claus village and the SantaClausBand in the Irpinian village of Greco di Tufo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Christmas Atmosphere in Santa Paolina is the festival through which the municipal administration ushers the town into the holiday season. Santa Paolina is a town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the Province of Avellino, Campania, nestled at an altitude of about 500 meters between the Sabato and Calore valleys: a setting where Christmas remains a collective affair, experienced in the square and through the alleys rather than inside homes. The event's formula is simple and explicitly aimed at children and families, with several days of entertainment concentrated in the days leading up to December 25th.
The heart of the event is Piazza IV Novembre, which for an afternoon turns into an enchanting Christmas village. In the edition documented by the Sistema Irpinia portal, that of December 2024, the opening was set for 5:00 PM on December 20th, with a program entirely designed for the little ones.
This is not a large city market, but a village festival: the square is small, the families all know each other, and the entertainment serves to bring together children who, for the rest of the year, live scattered among the numerous hamlets of the territory.
The second appointment of the festival is a musical parade: the SantaClausBand 2.0, a band composed entirely of musicians dressed as Santa Claus, crosses the streets of Santa Paolina and then performs in Piazza IV Novembre. In 2024, the parade was scheduled for December 22nd starting at 10:00 AM. The Christmas melodies and the enthusiasm of the musicians involve the entire town, with an itinerant format that brings music even to the more remote streets of the historic center and under the windows of those who cannot make it to the square.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipal Administration of Santa Paolina in collaboration with the Piccoli Comuni del Welcome network and the Sale della Terra consortium, entities active in Irpinia on the themes of hospitality and village regeneration. The choice is not accidental: here, Christmas also becomes an opportunity for inclusion and sociality for a small community, distributed among the hamlets of Castelmozzo, Marotta, Paoloni, Picoli, Sala, and Santa Lucia.
Those who arrive for the holidays find a village that has much to tell even outside the Christmas calendar. Santa Paolina is part of the Greco di Tufo DOCG area, one of the great white wines of Campania, and produces extra virgin olive oil and caciocavallo cheese. The town is also known for the production of tombolo (bobbin lace), the handmade lace created on a cushion, a craft tradition still guarded by local lacemakers and celebrated by special exhibitions. The historic center, made of alleys and stairways, preserves the church of Santa Paolina and San Felice, of 13th-century origin, and the church of the Addolorata. According to tradition, the town was born after a landslide destroyed the ancient settlement of San Felice: the population moved around the church dedicated to Santa Paolina, which later gave its name to the town, first mentioned in a notarial deed in 1083.
The appointments traditionally take place in the last days before Christmas. The exact dates are communicated from year to year by the Municipality and promoted by the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino: at the time of writing this sheet, the calendar for the 2026 edition has not yet been released. It is therefore advisable to check for updates on the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Paolina before setting off.
At the time of writing this sheet, no program has been published for the December 2026 edition of Christmas Atmosphere in Santa Paolina. This is a standard situation for a village event organized by the municipal administration, whose calendar is defined and communicated close to the holidays, often in the first half of December.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect the return of the two components that characterize the festival: the setting up of the Santa Claus village in Piazza IV Novembre, with entertainment and games for children, and the parade of the SantaClausBand through the streets of the historic center. However, none of these appointments are confirmed for 2026: dates, times, and content remain to be verified.
For updates, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Paolina, in the Province of Avellino, and the events section of the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province, which collects the Christmas calendar of Irpinian municipalities every year.
Santa Paolina is about 21 km from Avellino. By car, take the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction or the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway with an exit at Avellino Est, then continue along the provincial roads of the Greco di Tufo area. The most practical means remains the car: the village is served by limited public transport, especially on holidays. The reference airport is Naples-Capodichino, just over an hour away.
Activities are concentrated in Piazza IV Novembre and the streets of the historic center. The town hall is located at Piazza Alberto De Buono 1, 83030 Santa Paolina (AV).
The documented editions were held with free admission, including entertainment for children.
These are outdoor events in a town that exceeds 500 meters in altitude: in December, heavy winter clothing and comfortable shoes are needed, as the historic center is made of alleys and stairways. Parking should be sought along the access roads to the center, which may be closed to traffic during the event hours.
