The Monopoli Carnival dedicated to the little ones in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II
The Children's Carnival is the event with which the Municipality of Monopoli, in the Metropolitan City of Bari, celebrates Carnival by putting children at the center. The natural stage for the event is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the city's living room, which for a few days in February fills with masks, colors, music, and joy, becoming a true open-air amusement park for children and families.
The characteristic that distinguishes the Monopoli Carnival is the leading role entrusted to the pupils of the city's schools. The masked parades feature the participation of children from the nursery and primary schools of the city's four Comprehensive Institutes, while students from the "Luigi Russo" Art High School present performances with costumes made entirely by them, often inspired by artistic and decorative themes. It is a collective effort that involves school principals, teachers, and families, transforming the festival into a moment of community.
The program alternates parades with stage performances set up in the square. Among the attractions designed for the little ones, there is no shortage of:
In editions featuring the "open-air amusement park" format curated by the Pro Loco, there are also inflatables, mascots, bubble shows, and balloon art, for a day entirely dedicated to family fun.
Organized by the municipal administration together with social services, the Pro Loco Monopoli "Perla di Puglia", and local associations, the Children's Carnival has free admission. It represents one of the most anticipated events of the Monopoli winter and confirms the vocation of the Apulian Adriatic coast city to build accessible events, rooted in popular tradition and capable of uniting schools, families, and the local area.
The 2026 edition of the Children's Carnival in Monopoli was originally scheduled for Thursday, February 12, and Tuesday, February 17, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. However, the predicted bad weather forced the administration to reschedule: the event on February 17 (Shrove Tuesday) was moved indoors to the municipal tensile structure, while the main day was confirmed and rescheduled for Thursday, February 19, in the square.
The program on February 19 included masked parades with the participation of nursery and primary schools from the city's Comprehensive Institutes, performances by students from the "Luigi Russo" Art High School with costumes they created themselves, shows and games on stage and throughout the square, along with majorettes, clowns, stilt walkers, and face painting for audiences of all ages. The event, coordinated by the Department of Public Education with the Pro Loco "Perla di Puglia" and local schools, was confirmed as free and open to the public.
The Children's Carnival takes place in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, in the center of Monopoli (BA). In case of bad weather, some activities may be moved indoors (municipal tensile structure).
By train: the Monopoli station is on the Adriatic line (Bari-Lecce), a short walk from the square. By car: take the Monopoli exit from the SS16 Adriatic state road, then follow signs for the center. It is recommended to park in areas outside the historic center.
Free admission. Event designed for children and families.
