About Chieti Living Nativity

Every year on Epiphany, the historic center of Chieti transforms into a vast open-air theater. Organized by the Teate Nostra association, the Living Nativity brings the Nativity to life with costumed actors, animals, and scenes depicting ancient trades. This evocative journey through the most characteristic alleys and squares of the Abruzzo capital continues a tradition born in 1995, now one of the most cherished Christmas events in the region.

The Chieti Living Nativity

The Chieti Living Nativity is one of the most beloved sacred performances in Abruzzo. Every year, around Epiphany, the historic center of the city comes alive with dozens of living scenes: the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, the village of Bethlehem, and ancient trades take shape among the city's alleys and squares, featuring hundreds of actors in period costumes, animals, and meticulously detailed settings.

A tradition born in 1995

The event is organized by the Teate Nostra Cultural Association, with the support of the Municipality of Chieti. The first edition took place on December 30, 1995. Since then, the Nativity has grown to involve around two hundred participants and numerous local associations, driven by an army of volunteers. Over the years, the performance has weathered various challenges—including interruptions due to the Covid pandemic and several years of suspension—before returning with renewed energy to the city's ancient heart, partially resuming the original 1995 route.

The route and scenes

The public follows a one-way itinerary that winds through the most evocative spots in Chieti. It starts from the ancient workshops dedicated to traditional crafts, passes through reconstructed villages—from the Roman camp with Herod and the Magi to the village of Bethlehem—and concludes with the Nativity scene. The performances are accompanied by live music that helps create an intense and intimate atmosphere, captivating for both adults and children.

Chieti and Abruzzo

Located in the heart of the Province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, the city of Italic and Roman origin—the ancient Teate—provides the ideal backdrop for this re-enactment: its medieval alleys, churches, and historic vistas become the natural scenery for the Nativity. The event attracts numerous visitors from neighboring towns every year and represents one of the symbolic appointments of the Christmas season in the Chieti area.

Admission and information

Admission to the Living Nativity is traditionally free. To ensure safety and a smooth flow, access is usually managed in limited groups, with opening hours in the late afternoon and early evening. It is advisable to check the route and updated schedules, which may vary based on the chosen district and weather conditions.

Chieti Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 31st edition of the Chieti Living Nativity was scheduled for January 6, 2026, in the Civitella district, featuring about 200 participants and 21 scenes. Due to bad weather and numerous flu cases among the participants, the event was first postponed to January 11 in a reduced format and finally cancelled altogether.

Chieti Living Nativity 2026 — 31st Edition

The 31st edition of the Chieti Living Nativity, scheduled for January 6, 2026, was intended to take place in the evocative Civitella district, with entry from Via San Rocco along the descent of Via Nicoletto Vernia, climbing up to the Civitella church, and arriving at the Nativity scene set up in Largo Monaco La Valletta. The edition was designed as a special event to mark 800 years since the first Nativity scene in Abruzzo and Southern Italy, with about 200 participants, 21 scenes, and musical accompaniment by the Abruzzo Etnorchestra La Figlia di Iorio, conducted by Mario Canci.

Due to bad weather and numerous flu cases among the participating groups, the January 6 appointment was postponed to Sunday, January 11, in a reduced format, with three stations concentrated at the top of the district and about 100 participants. However, adverse weather conditions ultimately led to the final cancellation of the performance. The event remains a reference point for the Chieti holiday season, pending future editions.
