The red gold of Irpinia in Piazza Oscar Brini, Santo Stefano del Sole
The Cherry Festival is the most iconic event in Santo Stefano del Sole, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, nestled in the hills of the Upper Sabato Valley within the Serinese-Solofrano district. For over twenty years, the Pro Loco Santostefanese has organized this gathering, which has become a well-known tradition throughout Irpinia. The date is never fixed by chance; it is chosen each year based on the fruit's ripening cycle, typically falling between the last week of June and the very first days of July.
The true star of the evening is the Imperiale cherry, a typical variety grown on the terraces surrounding the village. It has a slightly tart flavor and a color ranging from yellow to red, never too bright: characteristics that make it perfect for both fresh consumption and artisanal processing. Cherry cultivation has been a cornerstone of Santo Stefano del Sole's agriculture for generations, so much so that the fruit is known here as the red gold of the territory. The festival was created specifically to celebrate the production and export of local cherries and to showcase the hard work of small-scale farmers.
Over the years, there has been no shortage of culinary experimentation: alongside classic desserts, more curious dishes like cherry risotto or cheeses flavored with the fruit have appeared, a sign of a community that plays with its signature product without betraying its identity.
The festival takes place in Piazza Oscar Brini, which the locals simply call la piazzetta. It is a natural viewpoint overlooking the Sabato Valley, complete with a fountain, small gardens, and benches: an intimate space that becomes the village's living room on summer evenings. The arrangement of stalls along the square and the lights glowing at sunset give the event an intimate atmosphere, very different from large mass-market festivals, where it is easy to chat with producers and Pro Loco volunteers.
The Cherry Festival effectively kicks off the municipality's summer event season, which continues with the Vivi Santo Stefano program promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco, associations, and festival committees: concerts, youth evenings, exhibitions, gastronomic appointments, and the August patronal feasts dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr and Saint Vitus the Martyr. For those visiting Irpinia, the festival is also a great starting point for discovering a land of wines and villages: Serino, Solofra, Atripalda, and the provincial capital Avellino are just a few kilometers away, while the lands of Fiano di Avellino and Taurasi open up just a little further east.
Those who arrive at the Cherry Festival will not find a grand, spectacular event, but something rarer: an entire community bringing its harvest to the square for one night. It is an event to be experienced slowly, wandering from stall to stall with a paper cone of cherries in hand, listening to music, and enjoying the view of the valley. An excellent reason to plan an evening in Irpinia at the end of June.
On Saturday, June 27, 2026, Santo Stefano del Sole renewed its appointment with its most cherished festival. In Piazza Oscar Brini, the Pro Loco Santostefanese set up stalls dedicated to the local cherry, offering the chance to purchase fruit freshly picked by local producers and to taste specialties prepared for the occasion.
The event was included in the Vivi Santo Stefano 2026 program, the summer schedule promoted by the municipal administration led by Mayor Gerardo Santoli together with the Pro Loco, associations, and festival committees: a calendar designed for all ages that accompanies the community from June to September with music, tradition, and entertainment. After the Cherry Festival, the program continued with the summer playroom for children, the Saint Joseph festivities in the Sozze locality, the Nova Summer Festival dedicated to young people, the sunset concert by maestro Peppe Barra, "Siamo alla Frutta", the August patronal feasts, and SoleArte.
Evening event organized by the Pro Loco Santostefanese. The program, as per tradition, was structured around three main pillars:
A detailed hourly program and the complete list of guest artists were not released by the organizers.
Piazza Oscar Brini, center of Santo Stefano del Sole (AV), Campania. The square is pedestrianized for the occasion.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Bari motorway, take the Avellino Est exit, then follow the SS 7 bis and provincial roads towards Serino/Santo Stefano del Sole (approx. 15 km from Avellino). By train: Avellino station, then local bus or taxi. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, approximately 60 km away.
The village is small and the center's streets are narrow; it is advisable to leave your car in parking areas just outside the inhabited center and reach the square on foot.
The event takes place in the evening, with stalls opening after sunset. Admission to the festival area is free; tastings and products can be purchased directly at the stalls.
Irpinian evenings in late June can be cool: it is best to bring a light sweater. For those wishing to stay overnight, accommodation and farmhouses (agriturismi) can be found in Santo Stefano del Sole, Serino, and the Avellino area.
