About Praznik Češenj

In Caresana, a small Slovenian hamlet of the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle, the Praznik Češenj, the Cherry Festival, returns on the last weekend of May. One of the most beloved and ancient events of the Trieste Karst, born in 1962, celebrates the cherry season with Slovenian folk music, grilled meats, and Karst red wines, under the village's large trees.

Karst Cherries in Celebration

When the cherries ripen on the Karst hills, it's time for celebration in Caresana (Mačkolje in Slovenian). The Praznik Češenj, or the Cherry Festival, is one of the most deeply rooted and recognizable events in the Trieste Karst: a tradition that has been renewed every year since 1962, always on the last weekend of May, in this small hamlet of the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle, where Slovenian has always been spoken.

A Community Telling Its Story

More than a commercial festival, the Praznik Češenj is the celebration of a border community. It has been organized for decades by the Slovenian Cultural Association Mačkolje, which sets up wooden tables in the shade of large trees, on a small hill immersed in greenery. It is a place where the Slovenian language, folk songs, and ballads tell the past and present of a territory that lives between two cultures, in the province of Trieste.

What to Eat and Drink

The absolute stars are, of course, the cherries, sold in traditional baskets and offered in a thousand ways. But the table is also rich with grilled meats, dishes from the Karst and Slovenian tradition, and, inevitably, the robust and characterful Karst red wine, to be enjoyed with toasts. It's genuine, village-style, homemade cuisine.

Music, Dancing, and Atmosphere

The evenings unfold to the rhythm of Slovenian folk music: groups and bands animate traditional dances, while songs and ballads create that familiar and convivial atmosphere which is the true hallmark of this festival. A simple and authentic event, perfect for those who want to discover the Slovenian soul of the Trieste Karst away from the major tourist circuits.
