The cherry festival of the Trieste Karst in Caresana
When the cherries ripen on the Karst hills, it's time for celebration in Caresana (Mačkolje in Slovenian). The Praznik Češenj, or the Cherry Festival, is one of the most deeply rooted and recognizable events in the Trieste Karst: a tradition that has been renewed every year since 1962, always on the last weekend of May, in this small hamlet of the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle, where Slovenian has always been spoken.
More than a commercial festival, the Praznik Češenj is the celebration of a border community. It has been organized for decades by the Slovenian Cultural Association Mačkolje, which sets up wooden tables in the shade of large trees, on a small hill immersed in greenery. It is a place where the Slovenian language, folk songs, and ballads tell the past and present of a territory that lives between two cultures, in the province of Trieste.
The absolute stars are, of course, the cherries, sold in traditional baskets and offered in a thousand ways. But the table is also rich with grilled meats, dishes from the Karst and Slovenian tradition, and, inevitably, the robust and characterful Karst red wine, to be enjoyed with toasts. It's genuine, village-style, homemade cuisine.
The evenings unfold to the rhythm of Slovenian folk music: groups and bands animate traditional dances, while songs and ballads create that familiar and convivial atmosphere which is the true hallmark of this festival. A simple and authentic event, perfect for those who want to discover the Slovenian soul of the Trieste Karst away from the major tourist circuits.
The 63rd edition of the Praznik Češenj will be held in Caresana from May 29 to June 1, 2026. The festival will liven up the hamlet for four days, with stalls open from morning until late evening.
Under the village trees, the traditional Karst cherries, grilled meats, Slovenian specialties, and local red wine will be offered, accompanied each evening by folk groups and traditional dances.
The Praznik Češenj unfolds over four days, with food stalls open approximately from 8:00 AM to 11:30 PM.
The detailed music program with the names of the groups will be announced by the Slovenian Cultural Association Mačkolje in the weeks preceding the event.
