The Middle Distance triathlon of the international Challenge Family circuit on the Romagna Riviera
Challenge Cesenatico is the triathlon event that brings one of the most anticipated races of the international Challenge Family circuit to Cesenatico, in the province of Forlì-Cesena and the heart of the Romagna Riviera. Recently established as the Italian stage of the global network, the event is organized by ASD Triathlon Duathlon SGR Rimini and takes place every year at the beginning of May, attracting hundreds of elite and amateur athletes from numerous nations.
The main event is the Middle Distance, a format that follows the classic medium distance (the so-called half): 1.9 km of swimming in the Adriatic waters off the beach of Colonia Agip, 90 km of cycling winding through the Romagna plains and the picturesque inland hills, and finally 21 km of running on a completely flat course along the city's promenade. The race qualifies participants for the Challenge Family international finals.
The program is not limited to the long race. Saturday is dedicated to the Sprint Triathlon Città di Cesenatico (750 m swimming, 20 km cycling, and 5 km running) and the Junior Duathlon for children and young people. On the day of the Middle Distance race, there are also Swim/Bike and Team Relay events, allowing participants to experience the race by sharing the disciplines among multiple athletes.
All activities revolve around the historic Colonia Agip, located at via Carducci 181, which hosts the race office, the Expo area with sponsor stands, the bike service, the transition area, and the start and finish lines. In the days leading up to the race, the colony becomes the meeting point for collecting bibs and for the usual press conference at the Palazzo del Turismo.
The event is part of Cesenatico's sporting tradition, a city linked to cycling and the memory of Marco Pantani, and the tourist vocation of the Romagna Riviera. The Leonardesque canal port, the equipped beaches, and the typical Romagna hospitality provide the backdrop for a weekend that combines high-level competition with a festive atmosphere for athletes, companions, and spectators.
Challenge Cesenatico 2026 took place from Thursday, May 7, to Sunday, May 10, with the highlight on the weekend. Saturday, May 9, saw the start of the Sprint Triathlon Città di Cesenatico (women at 9:45 AM, men at 1:15 PM) and, in the afternoon, the Junior Duathlon for younger participants.
Sunday, May 10, at 9:00 AM, the main Middle Distance race began (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling, and 21 km running), alongside the Swim/Bike event and the Team Relay races. The awards ceremony was held in the late afternoon at Colonia Agip. Race day involved traffic diversions and closures on city routes.
