The Cesarino Carnival is the most anticipated carnival event in Porto Cesareo, a renowned seaside resort on the Ionian coast in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento and Puglia. Every winter, the coastal town transforms into a large open-air stage: the masquerade parade winds through the streets, bringing music, color, and the imagination of costumed performers to residents and visitors alike.

The parade and papier-mâché floats

The heart of the event is the procession of masked groups, accompanied by allegorical papier-mâché floats crafted by local artists and artisans. The meeting point is Piazzale Alcide De Gasperi, near the Pro Loco, where the parade begins, winding through the town center to the main squares. Each group presents a theme—often inspired by current events, tradition, or fantasy—parading with dances, choreography, and infectious energy.

A community moment

More than just a parade, the Cesarino Carnival is a gathering point for the entire Porto Cesareo community. Competing groups vie for various awards and titles, from the most beautiful costume to the most original and fun, while a jury evaluates creativity, choreography, and audience engagement. There are also special prizes, such as the 'applause-o-meter' award, based on spectator enthusiasm, and accolades for social media popularity.

The tradition of Salento papier-mâché

The event is rooted in the tradition of papier-mâché, an art form typical of the Salento region, and in the volunteer work of the Spontaneous Carnival Committee, which coordinates the construction of the floats and the organization of the parade each year in collaboration with the Municipality of Porto Cesareo.
