A fresh festival in an ancient village

The Cellar Festival in Torrita Tiberina is one of the newest additions to the Tiber Valley summer calendar. The inaugural edition took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025, billed as a true "celebration of taste, tradition, and conviviality." The concept is simple and well-proven in many central Italian villages: for one night, the historic cellars—the vaulted, subterranean spaces once used to store wine and provisions—are opened to the public, becoming stops on a culinary journey that winds through narrow alleys, arches, and small squares.

The village of Torrita Tiberina

The Municipality of Torrita Tiberina, home to just over a thousand residents in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, sits on a ridge overlooking a bend in the Tiber River, on the border between the Roman countryside and the Sabina region. It is a compact, medieval village, best known as the resting place of Aldo Moro, but appreciated by visitors for its quiet atmosphere, river views, and a historic center that is perfect for strolling. This dense fabric of stone houses and cellars provides the natural stage for the festival: it is not an exhibition area set up for the occasion, but the town itself opening its doors to share its story.

How the evening works

The format for the first edition featured a single, intense summer evening, from 8:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with free admission. Along the route through the cellars and the most picturesque corners of the historic center, visitors can find:

• traditional local dishes from the Sabina and Roman culinary heritage, prepared by local vendors;
• grilled specialties and freshly cooked food;
• wine tastings, the natural stars of a festival dedicated to cellars;
• live music playing along the route;
• roaming Roman folk songs, bringing the traditional repertoire of the capital from cellar to cellar.

The result is a gastronomic stroll where you eat and drink while moving from stop to stop, chatting with volunteers and locals alike: it is the classic "cellar festival" model that has made many central Italian events famous, presented here in its most genuine and rustic form.

A celebration of Sabina conviviality

More than just a festival dedicated to a single product, the Cellar Festival is a celebration of identity: it highlights the village, its minor architecture, and the pleasure of gathering on summer evenings. The event is promoted by local associations and fits into the tradition of summer festivals that enliven the small towns of the Tiber Valley and the Roman Sabina, such as Ponzano Romano, Filacciano, and Nazzano, all less than an hour from Rome.

Looking ahead

The 2025 debut was intended as the first step of an event destined to return. While the 2026 edition has not yet been officially confirmed, the festival is naturally expected to take place in mid-July, in the heart of the Tiber summer.
