The patronal feast of Pizzoli: faith, Abruzzo bagpipes, and the Torrone di Santo Stefano

On December 26th, the day the liturgical calendar dedicates to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, the town of Pizzoli, in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patron saint with a day of festivities blending religious devotion with popular tradition. Situated at an altitude of approximately 740 meters in the heart of the Amiternina Mountain Community and within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Pizzoli has upheld this tradition for centuries, involving the entire community during the Christmas season.
The festival begins at the crack of dawn, when firecracker salutes announce the start of the celebrations to the town. Shortly after, the unmistakable sound of Abruzzo bagpipes resonates through the historic center: an instrument tied to pastoral life and ancient transhumance routes, passed down through generations and deeply rooted in the musical identity of Abruzzo.
In the late morning, a solemn mass is celebrated in the parish church, during which the Mayor offers a candle to the Patron Saint on behalf of the civil community. The service is traditionally presided over by a bishop, reflecting the importance this occasion holds for the region.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, a wreath is laid at the War Memorial in Piazza Municipio, a moment that bridges civil memory with religious devotion. This is followed by the procession with the statue of Saint Stephen carried through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful and the notes of the bagpipes. Over the years, the community has also renewed the patron's statue, which now takes center stage in the devotional parade.
The most anticipated and characteristic moment of the day is the blessing and distribution of the Torrone di Santo Stefano, a traditional sweet that gives the festival its name and is shared with all attendees. This custom links the patronal celebration to the rich confectionery heritage of Abruzzo during the Christmas period, making the torrone a symbol of conviviality and belonging.
Pizzoli is more than just its patronal feast: the village preserves a remarkable heritage, from the Palazzo Dragonetti De Torres with its medieval pentagonal tower to the 14th-century Church of Santo Stefano a Monte, and the Church of San Lorenzo with its frescoes. Visiting Pizzoli on December 26th means immersing yourself in an authentic tradition of inland Abruzzo, where faith, folk music, and gastronomy merge into a unique village celebration.
