The patronal feast of Cagnano Amiterno, blending faith and folk tradition in the Upper Aterno Valley
The Patronal Feast of Saints Cosma and Damiano is the most anticipated event of the year for the community of Cagnano Amiterno, a town of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 850 meters in the Upper Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. The two physician saints, Cosma and Damiano, are the town's patrons and are celebrated every year on September 26th, the day of their liturgical commemoration, with a celebration that intertwines the religious and popular dimensions.
The heart of the feast is the Parish Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, which stands on the summit of a hill overlooking the small village of Torre. The building, a single rectangular nave about thirty meters long, houses altars and niches along its walls and features a squared-stone facade embellished by a Renaissance portal bordered by fluted pilasters. The church is the fulcrum around which the festivities develop: from here, the procession with the statues of the patron saints begins, accompanied by the faithful along the streets of the village.
The devotion to Saints Cosma and Damiano, venerated as protectors of doctors and the sick, has roots in an ancient tradition deeply embedded in the Amiterno territory. The feast attracts both resident locals and those connected to the town who return for the occasion, strengthening the bonds of a community spread across the numerous hamlets of the municipality, from San Cosimo, the municipal seat, to the other nuclei of the valley.
Alongside the religious rites, the patronal feast retains the typical character of Abruzzo village festivals, with convivial moments, music, and social opportunities that animate the village during the days of the festivities. It is the expression of a mountain folk culture that in Cagnano Amiterno, as in the other municipalities of the Upper Aterno Valley, keeps the calendar of summer and early autumn patronal feasts alive, punctuating the life of the small communities of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
Participating in the Feast of Saints Cosma and Damiano means discovering a little-known and genuine corner of inland Abruzzo: a mountain territory dominated by the massifs of Gran Sasso and Laga, where the Piana di Cascina and high-altitude trails are perfect for hiking, and where religious and civil tradition continues to mark the rhythm of the community. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to experience the hospitality and identity of this mountain village.
The Patronal Feast of Saints Cosma and Damiano returns to Cagnano Amiterno (AQ) on September 26, 2026, on the liturgical day dedicated to the two patron saints of the municipality. As per tradition, the day will be marked by solemn mass and the procession with the statues of the saints, starting from the parish church on the hill of Torre. The detailed calendar of civil and religious festivities has not yet been published: it will be released by the San Cosimo parish and the municipal administration closer to the event.
The feast is held in Cagnano Amiterno (AQ), postal code 67012, centered at the Parish Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, on the hill above the hamlet of Torre. The municipal seat is in the hamlet of San Cosimo.
