The Abruzzo pastoral tradition in the heart of the Upper Aterno Valley

The Pecora alla Callara Festival is one of the most representative gastronomic events in Barete, a small mountain municipality of just over seven hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 800 meters in the Upper Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. Every summer, the village gathers around a dish that tells the story of centuries of Abruzzo pastoral life, offering a chance to rediscover authentic mountain flavors and the conviviality of inland communities.
Pecora alla callara originates from transhumance, the ancient seasonal migration of flocks now recognized as intangible cultural heritage. During long journeys toward the Tavoliere delle Puglie, shepherds carried only a few essential tools: hence the idea of slow-cooking the meat of older animals in the callara, the traditional copper cauldron that distributes heat evenly, making the meat tender and flavorful. The slow, patient cooking process lasts several hours over a gentle flame, combined with a base of sautéed vegetables, wine, rosemary, bay leaves, and chili pepper.
The absolute star is naturally the pecora alla callara, served steaming hot at the village stalls. It is accompanied by other flavors of the L'Aquila tradition:
Beyond the food and wine, the event features live folk music, folk groups, markets selling local products, and entertainment for all ages. The event is part of the Estate baretana program, the summer season of festivities that enlivens Barete between July and August, serving as a gathering point for the entire community and visitors from neighboring towns.
Located along the road leading from L'Aquila toward Lake Campotosto, on the edge of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Barete preserves a valuable historical heritage, from the church of San Paolo with its holy water stoups carved from Romanesque capitals to the church of Sant'Antonio Abate. The festival is the ideal opportunity to combine a culinary experience with the discovery of an authentic corner of the Abruzzo mountains.
The Pecora alla Callara Festival in Barete returns in the summer of 2026 with its event dedicated to the iconic dish of the Abruzzo pastoral tradition. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released: as in previous years, the event is expected to take place in August, as part of the Estate baretana program. For updates on days, times, and activities, please consult the official channels of the Pro Loco of Barete.
Barete is located in the Upper Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached from L'Aquila along the road to Lake Campotosto; the nearest motorway exit is L'Aquila Ovest (A24). The reference railway station is L'Aquila, which is then connected to the village by bus.
Admission to the festival is free; food and drinks can be purchased at the gastronomic stalls. It is recommended to check the channels of the Pro Loco of Barete for updates on dates, times, and the program.
As it is a mountain village at 800 meters, it can get chilly on summer evenings: it is useful to bring a light jacket.
