Floats, masquerades, and the 'Te lu Paulinu' ritual in the heart of Salento
The Cavallino Carnival is one of the most cherished carnival celebrations in the Lecce area. It takes place in Cavallino, a town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento, and spans both the historic center and the village of Castromediano. For a few days, the town streets are filled with allegorical floats, masked groups, confetti, and music, in a popular celebration that weaves together fun, satire, and traditional Salento rural culture.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats that winds through the city center. The floats, meticulously crafted by local associations and groups, parade through the crowds to Piazza Sigismondo, where the awards ceremony takes place. Alongside the floats, masks, performers, and costumed groups march to the sound of music and entertainment that engages families, children, and visitors of all ages.
The most distinctive feature of the Cavallino Carnival is the Salento tradition of 'Te lu Paulinu', celebrated on Shrove Tuesday. A procession in the form of a mock funeral accompanies the effigy of Paulinu through the town's alleys to the San Michele Arcangelo Pastoral Center, where the figure is burned. According to popular tradition, Paulinu (or Paolinu) represents the dying Carnival: his burning marks the end of the festivities and the arrival of Lent, an ancient rite found in many towns across Salento.
Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the Maria Assunta Parish and supported by the City of Cavallino, the Cavallino Carnival is a free, inclusive event that draws residents from neighboring towns. With masked balls, shows, and street parties, the event showcases the identity of Cavallino and the vibrant carnival traditions of Puglia.
The 11th edition of the Cavallino Carnival featured two main events. On Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 3:00 PM, the allegorical float parade traveled through the streets of Cavallino, arriving at Piazza Sigismondo, where awards were presented among masks and costumed groups. On Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (Shrove Tuesday), at 3:00 PM, the 'Te lu Paulinu' procession took place through the town's alleys, concluding at the San Michele Arcangelo Pastoral Center with the burning of the effigy, marking the end of the Carnival.
Cavallino is located just a few kilometers from Lecce, in Salento. By car, it can be reached via the Lecce ring road; the reference train station is Lecce, which is connected to the main cities in Puglia.
The main events animate the historic center of Cavallino, Piazza Sigismondo (float awards), Piazza Castromediano, and the San Michele Arcangelo Pastoral Center (via Cattaneo), where the Shrove Tuesday procession concludes.
Participation in the parades and square events is free. Themed costumes are recommended for children and families.
