Market fair and historical carriage gathering in Strudà
Every year on June 2nd, the small but lively village of Strudà, in the municipality of Vernole (province of Lecce), becomes the beating heart of the most authentic Salento with Cavalli in Carrozza, a market fair accompanied by a distinctive gathering of historical carriages and horses. It is one of those local festivals that captures the deep bond between the Salento communities, their land, and ancient rural traditions better than any guidebook.
The fair enlivens the village from the early hours of the morning: streets and squares fill with stalls offering local products, handicrafts, and the various goods that have always accompanied the great Puglian village fairs. It is the perfect opportunity to stroll among the stalls, meet the locals, and rediscover a way of life rooted in the rural civilization of Salento.
The most anticipated moment is the gathering of historical carriages and horses, which parade through the streets of Strudà starting at 10:00 AM. Traditional rigs, meticulously maintained harnesses, and horses in parade attire evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era, when the carriage was the ultimate symbol of grand occasions. It is a spectacle that draws enthusiasts and curious onlookers from all over Salento, accompanied by applause and photo opportunities.
Strudà is a hamlet of the municipality of Vernole, located in the hinterland of the Lecce Salento, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast and the seaside resorts of Vernole. The June 2nd festival is one of the most iconic events on the local calendar, involving the entire community, including volunteers, associations, and the Pro Loco, in a spirit of great public participation.
Cavalli in Carrozza is the perfect festival for those looking to experience the most genuine side of Salento, away from the beaten tourist paths, amidst authentic flavors, equestrian tradition, and the warmth of village squares.
In 2026, Strudà once again renewed its appointment with Cavalli in Carrozza on June 2nd. From the morning, the village streets hosted the large market fair, with stalls of local products, handicrafts, and various items, while from 10:00 AM, the center came alive with the gathering of historical carriages and horses. There was no shortage of food stands with Salento specialties and folk music, in an atmosphere of great participation from the Vernole community.
