Floral-adorned horses and the re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt in the heart of Baroque Scicli
The Cavalcata di San Giuseppe is the most iconic event in Scicli, a stunning Baroque town in the Ragusa Province and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Every spring, the streets of the historic center fill with caparisoned horses, the scent of flowers, and devout crowds for one of the most scenic religious re-enactments in all of Sicily.
The heart of the festival lies in the floral-adorned horses: each animal parades covered in a large caparison entirely embroidered with thousands of wallflowers, the blooms known in Scicli by the dialect name balìcu. These caparisons, true ephemeral works of art, require weeks of patient labor by local artisans and families who stitch the flowers one by one to create sacred patterns and motifs. The result is a series of living masterpieces, admired along the entire route and later displayed to the public on Sunday.
The Cavalcata re-enacts the Holy Family's Flight into Egypt: Joseph, Mary, and the Child on their journey to escape persecution. Ancient propitiatory rites linked to the arrival of spring and the invocation of abundance and fertility have merged over the centuries with the Gospel narrative, creating a celebration where fire, flowers, and food become the protagonists of a collective ritual. The procession moves forward amidst the crackling of flames, the hymns of the faithful, and the intense fragrance of the flowers, culminating in the liberating cry that echoes through the crowd: «Patrià , Patrià , Patriaaarcaaa!».
Since 2011, the Cavalcata di San Giuseppe has been inscribed in the Intangible Heritage Registry of the Sicily Region (REI), a recognition that confirms its cultural and identity value. The event is organized by the Associazione Quattro Petali di Scicli, in collaboration with the local parish and the Municipality of Scicli, and includes a prize awarded by a jury for the most beautiful caparison.
The festival spans several days: the opening features parades of knights, flag-wavers, musicians, and vintage carriages; the grand evening cavalcade on Saturday is the highlight, featuring the procession of floral-adorned horses and the historical-religious representation of the Flight into Egypt; Sunday is dedicated to the exhibition of the caparisons, the procession with the statue of Saint Joseph, and the traditional Saint's dinner. There is no shortage of stands featuring typical food and wine products from the Iblean territory, making the Cavalcata a perfect opportunity to discover the flavors of Scicli's cuisine.
The 2026 edition took place from March 13 to 15, organized by the Associazione Quattro Petali di Scicli with the parish and the Municipality. The date was exceptionally moved forward by one week to avoid overlapping with the constitutional referendum of March 22-23, 2026.
Friday, March 13th, opened with the food and wine market and, in the evening, the parade of knights, flag-wavers, musicians, and vintage carriages. Saturday, March 14th, was the highlight: guided tours of the districts, a parade of horses with simple harnesses in the afternoon, the historical-religious presentation of the Flight into Egypt, and, from 8:15 PM, the grand procession of floral-adorned horses re-enacting the Holy Family's flight, with the announcement of the winner of the Municipal Trophy. Sunday, March 15th, featured the exhibition of the floral caparisons, the procession with the statue of Saint Joseph, Holy Mass, and the Saint's dinner.
Scicli is located in the Ragusa Province, in the southeastern tip of Sicily. By car, from the A18/19 motorway, reach the Ragusa area and continue on the provincial roads towards Modica and Scicli. The nearest airport is Comiso (Ragusa), followed by Catania-Fontanarossa. The Scicli train station is served by the Syracuse-Gela line.
During the main day, a free shuttle bus service usually runs from the Zagarone district to the center. It is recommended to park in the outer areas and walk to the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the parades.
The event takes place in the streets and squares of the historic center and is free and open to the public.
