About Casteltermini Carnival

The Casteltermini Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in the Agrigento hinterland. For a few days, the town center transforms into a large open-air stage: papier-mâché floats, masked groups, confetti, streamers, music, and dancing bring the main streets to life, delighting both adults and children. The parades, which also feature local school children, depart from the Ferdinando Lombardo Municipal Stadium square and wind through the town center, culminating in the final awards ceremony for the best mask and group.

The Casteltermini Carnival

In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento, the Casteltermini Carnival is one of the most cherished winter traditions for the local community. For several days, this small town in central-southern Sicily dresses up in its finest, welcoming residents and visitors from neighboring villages in an atmosphere of contagious joy, filled with color, music, and folk tradition.

Papier-mâché floats and masked groups

The absolute stars of the event are the papier-mâché floats, the result of the patient craftsmanship of local artisans, and the masked groups that enliven the parades with original costumes and carefully choreographed routines. Amidst confetti and streamers, the main streets of the center fill with masks, dancing, and music, with parades typically held twice a day, in the afternoon and evening.

A Carnival for all ages

  • Parades of floats along the streets of the historic center
  • Masked groups, featuring the participation of preschool and elementary school students
  • Entertainment, music, and shows for children
  • Dance evenings and festive moments for the entire community
  • Final awards ceremony for the best mask and group

The parade route

The festive procession kicks off from the square in front of the Ferdinando Lombardo Municipal Stadium and travels through the main streets of the town, surrounded by cheering crowds and plenty of fun. The festivities conclude on Shrove Tuesday, when the best mask and group of the edition are awarded.

Casteltermini and its festive tradition

Founded in 1629 on the slopes of the Sicani Mountains, Casteltermini is known throughout Sicily for its rich festive heritage, most notably the famous Sagra del Tataratà in May. The Carnival represents another key identity moment for the community, serving as an opportunity for gathering and showcasing local craftsmanship, which brings these impressive floats and masks to life. It is an authentic folk festival, far from the mass-tourism crowds, yet capable of conveying the warmth and hospitality of the Agrigento hinterland.
