Papier-mâché floats and masked groups in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento, the Casteltermini Carnival is one of the most cherished winter traditions for the local community. For several days, this small town in central-southern Sicily dresses up in its finest, welcoming residents and visitors from neighboring villages in an atmosphere of contagious joy, filled with color, music, and folk tradition.
The absolute stars of the event are the papier-mâché floats, the result of the patient craftsmanship of local artisans, and the masked groups that enliven the parades with original costumes and carefully choreographed routines. Amidst confetti and streamers, the main streets of the center fill with masks, dancing, and music, with parades typically held twice a day, in the afternoon and evening.
The festive procession kicks off from the square in front of the Ferdinando Lombardo Municipal Stadium and travels through the main streets of the town, surrounded by cheering crowds and plenty of fun. The festivities conclude on Shrove Tuesday, when the best mask and group of the edition are awarded.
Founded in 1629 on the slopes of the Sicani Mountains, Casteltermini is known throughout Sicily for its rich festive heritage, most notably the famous Sagra del Tataratà in May. The Carnival represents another key identity moment for the community, serving as an opportunity for gathering and showcasing local craftsmanship, which brings these impressive floats and masks to life. It is an authentic folk festival, far from the mass-tourism crowds, yet capable of conveying the warmth and hospitality of the Agrigento hinterland.
The 2026 Casteltermini Carnival took place on February 14, 15, 17, and 21, bringing the town center to life with parades of papier-mâché floats and masked groups. The parades, typically held twice a day in the afternoon and evening, departed from the square in front of the Ferdinando Lombardo Municipal Stadium before winding through the main streets of the historic center.
Amidst confetti, streamers, music, and dancing, preschool and elementary school students also participated, creating a festive atmosphere that involved the entire Casteltermini community. The event concluded with the awards ceremony for the best mask and group.
2026 Edition Dates: February 14, 15, 17, and 21, 2026.
Casteltermini is located in the hinterland of the Agrigento province, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 (Agrigento-Palermo) taking the exit for Casteltermini, or via the SS118. The most convenient train stations are in Agrigento and Palermo, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The parades depart from the square in front of the Ferdinando Lombardo Municipal Stadium and travel along the main streets of the historic center.
Participation in the parades along the town streets is free and open to everyone.
We recommend wearing comfortable, warm clothing, given the winter season, and checking the updated parade times with the Municipality of Casteltermini.
