Live music, local flavours, and entertainment in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya
Castel in Fest is now the most popular summer event in Castel San Giorgio, a town of nearly 14,000 residents in the province of Salerno, Campania. The festival does not stem from a centuries-old tradition, but from a recent idea: in September 2025, two local youths, Danilo Rescigno and Giovanni Navarra, organised the first edition with the support of the local council. Their goal was simple and practical: to bring people back to the town square, promote local businesses, and create an event that serves as both a concert series and a community celebration.
The public response was immediate, and by the second edition in July 2026, the format expanded from three to five consecutive nights, drawing crowds typical of a major popular festival.
Everything takes place in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya, the town's central square, which is transformed for the occasion into an event space complete with a stage, lighting, stalls, and public areas. The choice of location is no coincidence: it is the usual meeting point for locals and is within walking distance for most of the town. Admission is free, and the festivities typically begin after sunset when the temperature cools down.
The musical programme is intentionally broad and popular, designed to bring different generations together. The first two editions featured a mix of DJ sets, artists from the Neapolitan neomelodic scene, Neapolitan rap stars, cover bands, and dance nights. There is no shortage of tributes to the greats of Neapolitan and Italian music, nor the 90s-themed parties that have become a staple in squares across Campania.
Alongside the stage, the culinary aspect is the festival's second engine. In the 2026 edition, over thirty stalls were set up, offering typical Campanian dishes, street food, desserts, and beer. It is the classic village festival experience with an urban twist: you eat while walking between stalls, waiting for the concert to begin. Many of the offerings come from merchants and producers in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, the agricultural area behind the Lattari Mountains known for its tomatoes and canning tradition.
Castel in Fest is not just for twenty-somethings. Each edition includes play areas and entertainment for children—in 2025, it even featured a full-scale funfair—as well as entertainment for adults. The result is a diverse crowd, with families arriving early to dine at the stalls and staying for the show. The latest edition also included a raffle with a final draw, another classic element of local village festivals.
Castel San Giorgio is located at the north-western edge of the province of Salerno, bordering the Neapolitan territory, in a position that has always made it a transit point. The municipality consists of numerous hamlets scattered between the plains and the foothills, preserving a strong farming and artisanal identity. For a town like this, festivals like this are more than just entertainment: they are moments when the entire community gathers in one place, and when neighbouring towns of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese converge on the centre.
Those looking for an authentic, free, and unfiltered festival, far from the polished major events, will find exactly that here: a packed square, loud popular Campanian music, local food, and a festive atmosphere that lasts until late. It is one of the best opportunities to experience summer life in the Salerno hinterland.
The 2026 edition of Castel in Fest marked a major step up for the event: from the three nights of the debut, it expanded to five consecutive days, from 3 to 7 July, with a stage set up in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya and a different programme each night. The event, organised by local youth with the support of the Municipality of Castel San Giorgio, was designed from the start as a showcase for local businesses as well as a popular festival.
The line-up featured a variety of genres: it opened on Friday with Purgatorio Napoletano and DJ sets, followed by an evening dedicated to Neomelodic music, one to Neapolitan rap, one to dance and tribute acts, and finally the grand finale on Tuesday with the Nostalgia 90 party and the raffle draw.
The final report released at the end of the event mentions approximately 60,000 attendees over five days, a figure that some local press reports push up to 75,000. Significant numbers for a town of just under 14,000 inhabitants, confirming Castel in Fest as one of the most popular summer events in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese.
