A run between mule tracks and medieval castles in Valtellina
The municipality of Montagna in Valtellina, overlooking Sondrio in the Province of Sondrio, hosts the Castel Grumello Walk every spring, a running event that blends sport, history, and landscape. The 7.3-kilometer course with a 290-meter elevation gain starts and finishes in Montagna Piano, near the church of San Giuseppe.
The trail is a journey into the most authentic Valtellina: it crosses villages and mule tracks, tackles the steep climb of "Runsc" and the mule track of "Risc dei Mort", passes through the historic center with the fifteenth-century church of San Giorgio, and reaches Castel Grumello, an evocative medieval ruin managed by the FAI. Along the way, you will also encounter the churches of San Rocco and Sant'Antonio, before the final descent through "Risc di Sassina".
More than just a race, the Castel Grumello Walk is an opportunity to admire the medieval landscape of Valtellina villages and trails, amidst terraced vineyards and views of the Adda valley. Participants and spectators experience a morning immersed in the history and nature of this corner of Lombardy.
The event, organized by ASD Pentacom, is part of the Retici Balzi circuit, which brings together five races held in the villages of Valtellina between May and July, from Sondrio to Castione, from Montagna in Valtellina to Tresivio. An event beloved by local runners and those seeking sport in contact with the local historical heritage.
