Sant'Andrea Fair of Chiuro

A fair with over three centuries of history

In Chiuro, in the province of Sondrio, the Sant'Andrea Fair has its roots in a distant past: as early as 1688, the Magnificent Community of Chiuro referred to it as an "ancient fair" in a plea to the authorities. Over the centuries, it has become one of the most significant markets in Valtellina, a reference point for mountain communities that supplied themselves there in preparation for winter.

Between tradition and winter provisions

Strategically held at the end of November, when farming families had the resources for supplies and livestock trading, the fair offered goods of all kinds: food, crafts, clothing, wooden household utensils, and copper objects. A local saying testifies to its importance in the life of the town: "S. Andrea ven debot, su sensa scarpi e sciablot", recalling the anticipation and, at the same time, the economic hardship of some families.

An event still alive

Today, the Sant'Andrea Fair retains its charm as a traditional market: along Via IV Novembre and in the center of Chiuro, stalls of local products, crafts, and gastronomy wind their way, creating an atmosphere that blends historical memory and village life. It remains one of the most cherished events in the autumn calendar of the province of Sondrio.
