The August celebrations in honor of Santa Vittoria and the Madonna delle Rose
In the heart of the Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila and the Abruzzo region, the town of Carsoli experiences its most heartfelt moment every summer with the Patronal Festivals dedicated to Santa Vittoria, the town's patron saint, and the Madonna delle Rose. The celebrations are concentrated in the second half of August, transforming the historic center and its Piazza Corradino into a stage for religious rites, music, and conviviality, involving the entire local community and the many emigrants who return for the occasion.
The cult of Santa Vittoria, a 3rd-century Roman martyr, has been deeply rooted in Carsoli since the Middle Ages: the parish church dedicated to her, located in the heart of the historic center, is mentioned as early as a 1115 papal bull by Pope Paschal II. The August 23rd anniversary links the saint to the historical memory of the territory, commemorating the victory of Charles I of Anjou over Conradin of Swabia near Scurcola Marsicana in 1268: for this reason, Santa Vittoria is often depicted as a warrior figure, defending the people against evil. The Madonna delle Rose is celebrated on August 22nd, in a devotion that intertwines Marian piety with the town's identity.
One of the most evocative moments is the Inchinata on August 14th: a candlelight procession departs from the Church of San Vincenzo accompanying the image of the Madonna delle Rose, and after the ritual 'bowing' (inchino), the image reaches the Church of Santa Vittoria, where the evening concludes with fireworks. During the festival days, solemn masses—often presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Avezzano—take place, along with processions featuring the statues of the patron saints and the participation of local confraternities.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Patronal Festivals offer a rich civic program that marks the days:
The Patronal Festivals of Carsoli are much more than a summer event: they represent a collective ritual that renews the community's bond with its roots, its medieval history, and its faith every year. For visitors, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Abruzzo Marsica, its historic center, and its living traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Carsoli Patronal Festivals will be held as per tradition in the second half of August, with the commemorations of the Madonna delle Rose on August 22nd and Santa Vittoria, the town's patron saint, on August 23rd. The organization is handled by the new Patronal Festival Committee, officially established in September 2025 and chaired by parish priest Father Umberto Di Pasquale, with Luca D'Andrea as delegate president. As every year, the Inchinata on August 14th, solemn masses, processions with the band, and fireworks are expected. The complete program for the 2026 edition, including times and names of guest artists, has not yet been announced.
Carsoli is located along the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway (Carsoli-Oricola exit) and is served by the railway station on the Rome-Avezzano-Pescara line. By car, it is about an hour from Rome and L'Aquila.
The events are concentrated in the historic center, particularly in Piazza Corradino, at the parish church of Santa Vittoria, and in the town streets.
Religious celebrations, processions, and concerts in the square are free of charge.
