Flavours, music, and tradition in the San Giovanni district of Chiaramonte Gulfi
The Carrugghiu Fest is a vibrant food, wine, and music festival held in the San Giovanni district of Chiaramonte Gulfi, one of Italy's most beautiful villages perched on the Iblei Mountains in the province of Ragusa. The name draws from the Sicilian dialect: a carrugghiu is a narrow alleyway in the historic centre, providing the perfect natural backdrop for a festival that fills the streets with scents, colours, music, and activities for all ages.
At the heart of the event is the food area, part of the "La Sicilia che piace" initiative, a journey dedicated to the authentic flavours of the region. The undisputed stars are the sausage sandwich, wine, and extra virgin olive oil from Chiaramonte, accompanied by typical products from neighbouring towns in the Iblean area, including specialties from Buccheri, Monterosso Almo, and Giarratana. The Carrugghiu Fest serves as the first stop on the Sapori Ibleidi project, an itinerary running from June to October across four Iblean municipalities to promote tourism linked to local food, wine, and identity.
The festival pairs its gastronomic offerings with a rich entertainment programme: markets, live music, and DJ sets keep the energy high until late at night. There is plenty of space for children, with entertainment, games, and dancing designed for families. On Sunday, the historic streets host the Music Festival, featuring local bands, singers, DJs, and dance schools.
Born from a desire to showcase the San Giovanni district and its traditions—linked to the celebrations of the patron saint Saint John the Baptist—the Carrugghiu Fest has quickly established itself as one of the most beloved summer events in Chiaramonte Gulfi. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover a village rich in history, panoramic balconies overlooking the Iblean plateau, and high-quality gastronomy, all within a welcoming, authentic Sicilian atmosphere.
The second edition of the Carrugghiu Fest brought Chiaramonte Gulfi to life on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 2026. On Saturday, from 6 PM to 2 AM, the San Giovanni district featured the food area of the "La Sicilia che piace" initiative, offering sausage sandwiches, wine, and Chiaramonte olive oil, alongside specialties from Buccheri, Monterosso Almo, and Giarratana, as part of the first stage of the Sapori Ibleidi project.
Chiaramonte Gulfi can be reached by car via the SS194 and the Iblean provincial roads; the nearest airport is Comiso (approx. 30 km), while the reference train station is in Ragusa.
The event takes place in June in the San Giovanni district and the historic centre, generally from late afternoon until late at night.
Admission to the festival is free; food and wine tastings are available for purchase at the various stands.
