The traditional carnival of Lanzo Torinese featuring historical masks, parades, and confetti
CarnivaLans is the carnival celebration of Lanzo Torinese, a town in the Province of Turin that serves as the gateway to the Valli di Lanzo in the heart of Piedmont. Every year, at the end of winter, the historic center fills with color, confetti, and masks for a day of celebration that involves the entire community: children, families, local associations, and shopkeepers.
The absolute protagonists of the event are Martin and Mariana, the historical masks of Lanzo. According to a tradition rooted in the medieval history of the town, during the opening ceremony, the mayor symbolically hands the keys of the city to Martin: for one day, power is transferred to the people, who can celebrate freely before the austerity of Lent. This ritual gives the Lanzo carnival a distinct identity, setting it apart from the large-scale carnivals of nearby cities like Turin.
Starting from Piazza del Donatore di Sangue, the main gathering point, the masquerade procession winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a themed float. The parade then reaches Piazza Rolle, where the traditional confetti battle breaks out—the moment most anticipated by the little ones. Each edition features a different theme, reflected in the costumes and decorations of the procession.
The fun doesn't end with the parade: in the LanzoIncontra hall and across the town squares, there are shows for children, juggling performances, games, and musical entertainment. There is no shortage of seasonal treats, with stands offering bugie (carnival fritters), hot chocolate, and mulled wine prepared by local associations. Shopkeepers also participate with a contest for the most original window display, adding color to the town's streets.
CarnivaLans is organized by the City of Lanzo Torinese together with the Oratorio Don Bosco and the Art Project association, with the collaboration of numerous local entities: the "Il Ribaltino" drama group, the Alpini Group, the Pro Loco, and local merchant associations. The result is a deeply rooted event that unites different generations and represents one of the most cherished moments in the Lanzo calendar.
Historic center of Lanzo Torinese (TO), with the meeting point in Piazza del Donatore di Sangue. In case of bad weather, events will take place indoors at the LanzoIncontra hall.
