The carnival float parade in Val Vomano, Penna Sant'Andrea
On Shrove Tuesday afternoon, the hamlet of Val Vomano, in the municipality of Penna Sant'Andrea (Province of Teramo, Abruzzo), transforms into a cheerful open-air stage. Piazza IV Novembre hosts the carnival float parade, featuring large allegorical floats carefully crafted in the surrounding valley towns, filled with vibrant colors, papier-mรขchรฉ figures, and boundless creativity.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Val Vomano, which gathers the enthusiasm of local volunteers, families, and young people every year to bring the village to life. The parade is accompanied by music, costumes, confetti, and entertainment dedicated to children, creating a convivial atmosphere that stands as one of the most anticipated winter events for the small community of Val Vomano di Penna Sant'Andrea.
The event is part of the regional initiative "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo", promoted by UNPLI Abruzzo, the network that brings together over 280 Pro Loco associations in the region. For the first time, the many carnival celebrations in the Abruzzo villages have been "networked" into a single calendar that, over the course of a week, highlights popular traditions, intangible heritage, and local identity. Val Vomano is one of over thirty stops that, from float parades to ancient re-enactments, tell the authentic soul of the Abruzzo Pro Loco network.
Penna Sant'Andrea is a small town in the Province of Teramo, nestled in the hills that follow the course of the Vomano river, between the Adriatic Sea and the massifs of Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. Experiencing Carnival in Piazza IV Novembre means connecting with the most genuine side of the festival: that of small villages where the community gathers, children run around in costumes, and the floats become a symbol of collective effort. A simple and sincere opportunity to get to know the popular traditions of inland Abruzzo.
The 2026 edition of the Val Vomano Carnival was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 3 PM to 6 PM, in Piazza IV Novembre in Penna Sant'Andrea (TE). The highlight was the carnival float parade created in the neighboring towns, featuring costumes, confetti, and children's entertainment.
The event was included, for the first time in a network, in the "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo" calendar by UNPLI Abruzzo, which brought together over thirty carnival festivals in Abruzzo villages from February 14 to 21, 2026. In Val Vomano, the organization was handled by the Pro Loco Val Vomano.
