The Roccamontepiano Carnival as part of the regional Pro Loco of Abruzzo festival circuit
In the heart of the Abruzzo winter, the Municipality of Roccamontepiano, a village of just over 1,800 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, celebrates its Carnival under the guidance of the local Pro Loco. The event is part of the extensive regional program "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo", a project that connects dozens of carnival celebrations across all four provinces of the region.
True to the tradition of Abruzzo carnival festivities, the event brings masks, colors, and cheer to the streets and squares of Roccamontepiano. It is a moment of togetherness that involves the entire community: children in costume, families, and local associations gather to share an afternoon of celebration, filled with music, dancing, and the warmth typical of the small towns of the Maiella area.
The "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo" initiative was created to promote the intangible cultural heritage of regional carnival traditions. Coordinated by UNPLI Abruzzo (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy), the program gathers dozens of events ranging from allegorical float parades to ancient folk rituals, from the famous "trial of Carnival" to food and wine festivals, with a special focus on families and sustainability. Roccamontepiano is one of the Chieti municipalities participating in this network of widespread celebrations.
Located on the slopes of the Maiella, Roccamontepiano is a village known for the Sanctuary of San Rocco and its artisan and folk traditions. Carnival represents a moment when the community recognizes itself and renews its bond with its roots, in line with the spirit of the Abruzzo Pro Loco associations dedicated to preserving local customs.
The Roccamontepiano Carnival is designed primarily for families and children, featuring the festive atmosphere that characterizes village celebrations in Abruzzo. Those visiting the Chieti hinterland during this period will find the festival an opportunity to discover the hospitality and genuine flavors of an authentic territory, far from the major tourist flows.
On February 14, 2026, Roccamontepiano celebrated its Carnival as part of the "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo" project, the program coordinated by UNPLI Abruzzo which, from February 14 to 21, connected over thirty events across the four Abruzzo provinces. The municipality in the province of Chieti brought the festive atmosphere of Carnival to the village streets, with masks, entertainment, and family involvement, in line with the spirit of promoting intangible cultural heritage that drives the regional initiative.
The detailed program of the local event was not released online in regional press channels; information was coordinated by the Pro Loco of Roccamontepiano and the abruzzoconleproloco.it portal.
