The Carnival for children and families in Piazza Cavicchioni
The Carnival in the Square in Albinea is the event that, every year between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, fills the town center with joy, in the heart of the Reggio Emilia Apennines. For an afternoon, Piazza Cavicchioni transforms into a large open-air play area, filled with confetti, streamers, and dozens of costumed children. It is a simple popular festival, designed primarily for families, which is an integral part of the traditions of the Municipality of Albinea, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna.
The heart of the event is the younger audience: cowboys and Indians, ninjas and little magicians, princesses and superheroes fill the square, creating a kaleidoscope of costumes and fantasy characters. The atmosphere is typical of a village carnival, filled with music, laughter, and the unmistakable scent of seasonal sweets. The initiative is free and child-friendly, with moments designed to directly involve the youngest attendees.
The program alternates creative workshops and live shows suitable for all ages. Over the years, the square has hosted performances by street artists, fire-eaters, and circus troupes, capable of captivating both adults and children. There is always a refreshment stand where you can enjoy cotton candy, popcorn, and typical carnival sweets, from 'chiacchiere' to carnival cookies.
Organized by the Municipality of Albinea together with the Pro Loco, the Parents' Committee of Albinea, and the association Albinea Live, the Carnival in the Square is one of the most anticipated events of the town's winter calendar. It represents an opportunity to gather, to introduce children to carnival masks and rituals, and to share an afternoon of celebration in one of the most vibrant villages on the Reggio Emilia hills.
For the 2026 edition, the Carnival in the Square in Albinea took place on Sunday, February 22, from 3 PM to 6 PM, in Piazza Cavicchioni. The event, dedicated to families and children, was organized by the Municipality of Albinea, Pro Loco, Parents' Committee of Albinea, and Albinea Live.
The program included a creative workshop and the show titled "Wanda mito, fammi sognare", produced in collaboration with Wanda Circus. At the refreshment stand managed by Albinea Live, cotton candy and popcorn were available for purchase. In case of bad weather, the event was moved indoors to Sala Maramotti, Via don Sturzo 2.
Albinea is located on the first hills south of Reggio Emilia, about 10 km from the provincial capital. By car, it can be reached from the SS63 or Via Tassoni in a few minutes from the Reggio Emilia exit of the A1 motorway. Piazza Cavicchioni is in the town center.
The festival takes place in the afternoon, approximately from 3 PM to 6 PM. Admission is free. In case of bad weather, the event will be held indoors at Sala Maramotti, Via don Sturzo 2.
As this is an event for children, carnival costumes are recommended for the little ones. For updated information, you can contact the Municipality of Albinea at +39 0522 590211.
