The atmosphere of South Tyrolean Christmas in the UNESCO heart of Modena
For over a month, the main square of Modena dresses up for the holidays and hosts the Tyrolean Christmas Market – Modena Christmas Village, one of the most beloved Christmas events in Emilia-Romagna. The log-cabin-shaped wooden stalls fill the historic center of the Emilian capital, bringing the scents, flavors, and crafts of the South Tyrolean valleys to the city. It's an event that has become part of Modena's winter calendar and attracts visitors from all over the province and beyond.
The route winds through the city's symbolic locations. The beating heart is Piazza Grande, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Cathedral and the Ghirlandina tower, where every evening at dusk, the building facades light up with suggestive video mapping projections. Piazza della Torre and Piazza XX Settembre complete the itinerary: the latter hosts Santa's Village, with his house, a themed carousel, creative workshops, and games designed for children.
The stalls offer the best of mountain gastronomic tradition: canederli (dumplings), apple strudel, speck (cured ham), grilled sausages, brezel (pretzels), and the essential mulled wine to warm up on cold evenings. Alongside food, the crafts include carved wooden decorations, edelweiss flowers, nativity figurines, hand-painted glass baubles, and scented candles, with exhibitors from South Tyrol and the Alps.
The entertainment program accompanies the entire duration of the event: gospel choirs, alpine singers, bagpipers, music bands, street artists, elf and Santa Claus parades, and circus acts liven up the squares, especially on weekends and during holidays. The event is organized by SGP Grandi Eventi with the patronage of the Municipality of Modena.
With its mix of Tyrolean tradition and Emilian historic setting, the Modena Christmas Village is an ideal destination for a winter trip with family or friends. Its extended duration, from late November to Epiphany, makes it one of the longest-running events of the Christmas season in the Modenese territory.
The Tyrolean Christmas Market – Modena Christmas Village 2026 is scheduled from November 20 to December 31, 2026, in the historic center of Modena. As tradition dictates, the three central squares – Piazza Grande (UNESCO Heritage), Piazza della Torre, and Piazza XX Settembre – will host wooden stalls with gastronomic products and alpine crafts, Santa's Village with a carousel and workshops for children, and evening video mapping projections on the facades of Piazza Grande.
Admission is free, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The complete program of shows, choirs, and entertainment will be published on the official website shortly before the event.
