The Scurzolengo Carnival

In the heart of the Asti Monferrato, where hills planted with Ruchè vines frame the landscape around the castle and the church of San Lorenzo, the small town of Scurzolengo celebrates its Carnival Festival every year. This event is deeply rooted in the village's identity, drawing families, children, and curious visitors from across the hilly Province of Asti in Piedmont.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Scurzolengo in collaboration with the local club, two associations that have enlivened village life and preserved its traditions for years. The Carnival takes place in the afternoon, transforming the main square into a vibrant open-air celebration.

An afternoon of fun for all ages

The Carnival Festival program focuses on shared joy and participation. Typical activities during the day include:

• Bouncy castles and games for the little ones, often in costume;
• Face painting to transform children into fantasy characters;
• Hot chocolate and mulled wine to warm up on a winter afternoon;
• A grand bean stew, the iconic dish of the Piedmontese Carnival, offered to all attendees;
• A charity market and activities with donkeys;
• Folk songs performed by the J'Arliquato folk group.

DolceScurzo, the homemade dessert competition

The most anticipated and iconic moment of the festival is DolceScurzo, a homemade dessert competition that gathers food lovers and amateur bakers from the Monferrato area. Participants drop off their creations in the morning at the Town Hall, where a jury evaluates taste, creativity, and presentation; the awards ceremony takes place in the afternoon, in the midst of the festivities. Originally a small challenge among enthusiasts, the initiative has grown edition after edition, becoming the hallmark of the Scurzolengo Carnival.

Tradition and community

The Scurzolengo Carnival Festival is the perfect example of how small Monferrato villages celebrate: without grand float parades, but with the genuine spirit of a community gathering in the square. For those visiting this corner of the Province of Asti, it is also an opportunity to discover a territory defined by vineyards, Ruchè wineries, and hilly landscapes recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
