The Galatone Carnival is celebrated in the heart of the Salento summer

In Galatone, a town in the Salento region in the province of Lecce, Carnival has a second life. Beyond the traditional winter parade of allegorical floats, the Comitato Carnevale Galatonese "Andrea Papa" brings the playful and festive spirit of the event into the heart of summer with the Carnival Festival – La Gastroallegria, an appointment that has become one of the most anticipated in the Galatone summer. The idea is simple and successful: to combine the joy of carnival with the great tradition of Apulian summer festivals, when town squares fill with long tables, aromas, and live music.
The stage for the festival is Piazza dell'Itria, one of the most evocative spaces in the historic center of Galatone, which transforms into a large gastronomic village for three nights. The stands set up by the committee and volunteers offer a culinary journey deeply rooted in Salento tradition, with a special focus on local sourcing and seasonal products, thanks to collaborations with local restaurateurs, pastry chefs, and producers.
The very name of the festival, La Gastroallegria, tells of its soul: eating well and in good company. Among the star dishes, you will find:
All this is accompanied by local wines and typical regional products, in a convivial atmosphere that is the true hallmark of Apulian village festivals.
The Gastroallegria is not just about food: every evening is enlivened by concerts, entertainment groups, and performances of pizzica and folk music, the traditional dance that is part of Salento's identity. Cover bands, Apulian artists, and taranta ensembles take turns on stage until late at night, involving families, young people, and tourists in a celebration that combines taste and fun.
The festival is promoted by the Comitato Carnevale Galatonese "Andrea Papa" with the support of the Municipality of Galatone, the Pro Loco, and numerous local partners, and is included in the city's summer calendar. It is a free-entry event designed to promote the gastronomic and popular traditions of Galatone and to enliven the Salento summer, just a few kilometers from the Ionian beaches and the tourist resorts of the province of Lecce.
The Carnival Festival – La Gastroallegria is included in the Estate Galatea 2026 program of the Municipality of Galatone, confirming that the event will return this year. At present, however, the exact dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers.
Based on previous editions, the festival typically takes place in the month of August in Piazza dell'Itria, in the center of Galatone, with three evenings dedicated to traditional Salento gastronomy — pettule, pezzetti di cavallo, quatara, and pasticciotto — and live music, including concerts and pizzica performances.
The detailed program, including the line-up and menu, will be published by the Comitato Carnevale Galatonese "Andrea Papa", the Pro Loco, and the Municipality of Galatone in the weeks preceding the event. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
