The Montespertoli Carnival in Piazza del Popolo
In the heart of the Florentine Chianti, just a few kilometers from Florence, the town of Montespertoli celebrates Carnival with Carnevalspertoli, a festive day that turns the historic center into a vast space for play and entertainment. The event, now a long-awaited tradition for children and families, centers on Piazza del Popolo, the town's main square, and involves local associations, merchants, and volunteers from across the community.
The heart of Carnevalspertoli is the afternoon dedicated to children. The square fills with confetti, inflatables, games, and workshops in a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere. This is not a Carnival with massive floats, but a warm, participatory town festival where the entertainment is curated directly by local entities: the School Parents' Committee, the Merchants and Artisans Association, local groups, and the Contrade of Montespertoli.
Throughout the day, the square features inflatables, confetti zones, creative workshops for children, and roving performances, such as bubble magicians and wooden games. There are prizes for the best costumes, snacks, and skill games that keep the square lively until late afternoon. The festival is completely free and open to everyone.
Montespertoli, located in the Metropolitan City of Florence (Tuscany), is famous for its winemaking tradition and the rolling hills dotted with Chianti vineyards. Carnevalspertoli is one of many occasions where the village opens its squares to social life: an excellent excuse to discover an authentic corner of the Tuscan countryside, far from the major tourist crowds but rich in popular traditions.
After the afternoon dedicated to children, the party continues into the evening with an aperitivo, DJ set, and the awards ceremony for the best group costumes: the perfect moment for those who want to experience Carnival with friends and adults, extending the day's joy into the night.
The 2026 edition of Carnevalspertoli brought Carnival to the center of Montespertoli on Sunday, February 8, with an afternoon entirely dedicated to families in Piazza del Popolo and an evening masquerade finale.
Among the afternoon activities, confetti, inflatables, and numerous creative workshops enlivened the square until sunset, in a festive and free atmosphere.
Montespertoli can be reached by car via the Florence-Pisa-Livorno highway (Ginestra Fiorentina or Empoli exit) and the SS429 road. It is approximately 35 km from Florence. The festival takes place in Piazza del Popolo, in the town center.
Carnevalspertoli is held on a single day during the Carnival period (between late January and early March, depending on the annual calendar).
Admission and activities are free. Snacks for children are provided by the organizers.
