The Pro Loco Carnival parade through the streets of Atripalda and Piazza Umberto I
When February hits its stride, the center of Atripalda, in the province of Avellino, transforms for an afternoon: shop windows fill with streamers, children head out in costume, and the unmistakable sound of tambourines echoes from the streets. This is the Carnevale in Piazza, an event that the Pro Loco Atripaldese association has been hosting for years with the patronage of the Municipality of Atripalda, and which has become one of the city's most anticipated winter traditions.
It is not a carnival of massive floats or a commercial spectacle: it is a village festival in the truest sense, built on volunteer work, family participation, and a repertoire of folk traditions that have been passed down through generations in Irpinia and, more broadly, in Campania.
The formula, tried and tested, remains the same each year. Groups and masked participants gather in the early afternoon, around 3:00 PM, at the local market area. From there, the procession takes shape, moving through the main streets of Atripalda's center with masks, costumes, live music, and dancing.
The destination is always the same: Piazza Umberto I, the city's living room, where the groups form a circle to perform for the public. This is the highlight of the day, the moment when the carnival stops being just a parade and becomes a shared popular performance.
The added value of the Carnevale in Piazza lies in its guests. Atripalda invites carnival troupes from neighboring townsโthose who guard the most ancient forms of the festival in this part of Campania. In recent years, the square has been animated by:
For those unfamiliar with this world, the Zeza is much more than a folk act: it is a form of peasant theater, with texts in dialect, female roles played by men, and choral singing accompanying the scene. Seeing it in a square, among the people rather than on a stage, is the best way to understand it.
The Carnevale in Piazza is designed primarily for children. Local children join in costume alongside their parents, and the procession turns into a collective stroll. The afternoon timing, the short route, and the conclusion in the square make the event easily accessible even for those with strollers or very young children.
The event traditionally falls on a Saturday afternoon during the carnival weeks: depending on the year, it can take place between mid-February and early March. The weather remains the main variable: in 2024 and 2026, the parade was postponed by a few days due to bad weather and held the following week, without sacrificing the celebration.
Located along the Sabato river, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital Avellino, Atripalda is a lively and compact city, easy to reach and perfect for a half-day trip. The Carnevale in Piazza is the perfect opportunity to discover it in its most authentic dimension: a community that, for one afternoon, gathers all in the same place.
2026 tested the patience of the organizers. The Carnevale in Piazza parade, set for Saturday, February 14, was postponed due to the bad weather that affected Irpinia that weekend. The Pro Loco Atripaldese, with the patronage of the Municipality of Atripalda, chose not to cancel the event and rescheduled it for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The format remained the classic one: meeting at 3:00 PM in the local market area, where groups, participants, and children in costume gathered; from there, the procession moved along the city center streets, eventually converging in Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the event, with performances by the invited folk troupes.
The program announced by the organizers included mascarata, zeza, tarantella dancers, and much more: the classic repertoire of the traditional carnival of the province of Avellino, entrusted to the folk companies that have animated the Atripalda square over the years, starting with the Zeza di Cesinali, which includes Atripalda in its carnival calendar.
The postponement did not dampen participation: the afternoon of February 21 confirmed the Carnevale in Piazza as one of the most heartfelt popular events of the Atripalda winter.
