The districts' allegorical floats parade through the heart of the city
The Carignano Carnival is a historic fixture on the festive calendar of the province of Turin, in Piedmont. Documented in its golden book since 1952, but with even deeper roots, it is the quintessential popular festival of the town of Carignano, engaging the entire citizenry every year in the creation of its famous allegorical floats.
The heart of the event is the competition between the city districts, which design and build their own allegorical floats from scratch each year. Five historic districts vie for victory:
The floats, built entirely by hand by volunteer groups, represent the pride of the festival: each district chooses a different theme and brings to life spectacular creations that animate the processions along the streets of the center.
Leading the parades are the two official masks of the Carnival: the Castellana and the Gran Siniscalco, officially invested during a ceremony that opens the festival in the presence of masks from neighboring towns. They represent the spirit and history of the event.
The program spans several days: in addition to the daytime Sunday parades, there is the evocative night parade on Saturday, with illuminated floats crossing the historic center in a magical atmosphere. There are also events dedicated to children, with the Kids' Carnival featuring games, entertainment, and snacks, the traditional serenade to the Castellana, and moments of solidarity for the community. The festival culminates on Shrove Tuesday with the final parade and the awarding of the winning district.
Between colorful floats, marching bands, mulled wine, and traditional pastries, the Carignano Carnival offers visitors an authentic immersion into the Piedmontese carnival tradition. It is a perfect opportunity to discover a town rich in history and to experience a festival that has united the community of this corner of the Turin area for generations.
Carignano is located about 30 km south of Turin. By car, it can be reached via the SS20 or the Turin ring road, taking the exit towards Carmagnola/Carignano. By train, the Carignano station is served by the Turin-Carmagnola/Saluzzo line.
The parades cross the historic center: starting from Piazzale Quadronda, along Piazza Carlo Alberto, Via Salotto, Via Principe di Carignano, Via Valdocco, and Via Umberto I.
Participation in the parades is free and open to all. During the processions, mulled wine and pastries are available in Piazza San Giovanni Bosco.
