The Irpinian new olive oil fair in the village of Baronia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Carifolio is the event that transforms Carifeโa village of just over a thousand inhabitants perched at 740 meters in the Baronia area of Avellino provinceโinto the symbolic capital of Irpinian extra virgin olive oil every December. Created to mark the end of the olive harvest, the fair brings together producers, professional tasters, chefs, and curious visitors around freshly pressed oil: what is still known here today as "green gold." This is not a mass-market festival, but a day of community, carefully crafted by a local association and hosted in a venue that speaks volumes about the town's identity.
The heart of the festival is the Ravece, the native cultivar most widespread in the municipal area and the foundation of the Irpinia โ Colline dell'Ufita PDO extra virgin olive oil. It is an oil with an intense fruity profile, featuring distinct and recognizable bitter and spicy notes, which has led Carife to join the National Association of Oil Cities. Alongside the Ravece, the Ogliarola is also grown, characterized by a golden-yellow color, a more delicate bitterness, and a pleasant almond scent. During Carifolio, visitors learn to distinguish between the two cultivars through sensory analysis sessions led by a panel of expert tasters who evaluate the oils presented by local companies.
The event takes place within the Archaeological Museum of Carife and Baronia, which houses artifacts from the Samnite necropolises discovered in the area, among the most significant sites in all of Irpinia. This choice is far from accidental: olive growing in these hills has deep roots in antiquity, and the Carifolio day constantly weaves together agricultural and archaeological narratives. It is no coincidence that the program typically includes a visit to the Samnite necropolis and a morning walk through the olive groves surrounding the town.
The well-established format alternates different activities throughout a single Sunday:
Lunch is an integral part of the festival, showcasing the dishes of the Irpinian peasant winter: lagane and beans, chickpea soup, wild boar stew, sautรฉed seasonal vegetables, and the famous pizza di granone, corn bread baked under a terracotta lid. Everything, of course, is drizzled raw with the new oil, which is still cloudy and vibrant green in December.
The Municipality of Carife is located in upper Irpinia, in a part of Campania very different from the coast: cultivated hills, forests, springs, and villages marked by earthquakes and rebuilt multiple times. Carifolio is one of the events that best tells the story of this inland Campania, where agricultural quality has become a lever for identity and cultural repopulation. For those visiting Irpinia in winter, the fair is also an opportunity to discover the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Palazzo Marchesale, and the landscapes of the Ufita Valley.
The event is promoted by the Associazione Culturale Gli Amici r' lu Callar, a very active group in Carife that also manages other traditional events on the local calendar, such as the St. Joseph bonfires. The organization takes place with the support of the Municipality and the collaboration of local agricultural businesses.
Carifolio does not promise big numbers: it promises authenticity. It is the type of event where you talk directly to the people who harvested the olives, taste the oil from a blue glass just like the professionals do, and eat among the locals. For those who love slow food tourism and local stories, it is a stop that rewards the journey to Baronia.
At the moment, there are no official announcements regarding the new edition of Carifolio in Carife, in the province of Avellino. The last documented edition was the twelfth, held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in the spaces of the Archaeological Museum of Carife and Baronia.
The event follows the rhythm of the olive harvest: the date is usually communicated in the weeks following the milling, therefore between the end of November and the first days of December. For this reason, the date indicated in this file is provisional and serves only to place the event in its usual period.
In previous editions, the day has alternated between walks through the olive groves, visits to the Samnite necropolis, the local producers' market, sensory analysis sessions of Ravece and Ogliarola cultivar oils, children's workshops, and traditional Baronia cuisine. None of these events are yet confirmed for 2026.
The most reliable channel is the Facebook page of the Associazione Culturale Gli Amici r' lu Callar, which publishes the flyer with the complete program a few days before the event. We will update this page as soon as the date is official.
Archaeological Museum of Carife and Baronia, Via Stefano Melina 24, 83040 Carife (AV), Upper Irpinia, Campania.
By car: Take the Vallata or Grottaminarda exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow provincial roads towards Baronia; the journey from Avellino takes about an hour. By train: The nearest useful station is Ariano Irpino, connected by local bus lines; service is limited on winter weekends, so a car remains the most convenient solution.
The fair is traditionally held on a Sunday in December, at the end of the olive harvest. In 2025, it took place on Sunday, December 14th.
Carife is located at an altitude of 740 meters: in December, heavy winter clothing and comfortable shoes for the walk through the olive groves are required. For lunch and tastings, it is advisable to contact the organizers in advance, as seating is limited.
