A living nativity scene in the rural village of Carcaci, featuring ancient crafts and local flavors
During the first days of January, the village of Carcaci, a rural hamlet of the Municipality of Centuripe in the province of Enna, transforms into a large open-air nativity scene. The narrow streets and the square of this small inland Sicilian settlement host the Carcaci Living Nativity, a performance that reconstructs the Nativity scene alongside tableaux of peasant life, with costumed characters, ancient crafts, and settings that transport visitors back to the atmosphere of a distant past.
The event is much more than a religious re-enactment: it is a story of the territory. Along the route, visitors encounter actors animating scenes of daily life, workshops, and artisanal activities of rural Sicily, giving voice to the village's memory and its folk traditions. In the evening, the performance concludes with a Eucharistic celebration, a deeply felt moment of reflection for the community of Carcaci and Centuripe.
The Living Nativity is intertwined with Ruralia, the agricultural market of Carcaci born from the desire to revitalize the village square and countryside. During the event, stalls offer genuine, zero-kilometer products from the area: ricotta, bread, local wine, and other specialties of the food and wine tradition of the Enna province. It is an opportunity to support local producers and discover the authentic flavors of inland Sicily, amidst tastings and popular entertainment.
The Carcaci Living Nativity is part of the broader Christmas program of the Municipality of Centuripe, the "imperial city" overlooking the valleys that separate Mount Etna from the Nebrodi mountains. Together with other festive events, it helps keep local traditions alive and attracts visitors to the village of Carcaci, in a setting defined by rural landscapes, spirituality, and Sicilian hospitality.
The Carcaci Living Nativity was spread over two days, intertwining the Nativity performance with the Ruralia farmers' market.
The event, part of the Christmas program of the Municipality of Centuripe, brought the streets and the village square of Carcaci to life with costumed actors, peasant life scenes, and the authentic flavors of inland Sicily.
