The Capri Leone Carnival featuring floats, masks, and Nebrodi traditions
The Caprileonese Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in Capri Leone, a town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina overlooking the Nebrodi Mountains in Sicily. For a few days, the town fills with masks, confetti, and music, with a program designed to engage children, teenagers, and adults in a festive atmosphere shared by the entire community.
The heart of the event lies in the parades of allegorical floats crafted from papier-mรขchรฉ by local artisans: true works of imagination and creativity that travel through the town streets accompanied by costumed groups. The Capri Leone floats often participate in parades in nearby towns, such as Capo d'Orlando, reflecting a carnival tradition deeply rooted throughout the Nebrodi district.
Plenty of space is reserved for the little ones with the Children's Carnival, animated in recent years by Marameo Animazione with games, dancing, face painting, and shows. There is no shortage of dance evenings with DJs and special guests, turning the municipal gym into a dance floor for all ages.
The event is organized by the Roccalandia association in partnership with the Municipality of Capri Leone. The association's volunteers build the floats and coordinate the various days of the festival, carrying it forward with passion and dedication to keep one of the town's most beloved traditions alive.
Among the festivals and celebrations in Sicily, the Caprileonese Carnival represents an important moment of social gathering for the Nebrodi territory. Masks, colors, and cheer fill the streets of the town, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience the Carnival in a carefree spirit while discovering an authentic corner of the province of Messina.
The 2026 Caprileonese Carnival took place in Capri Leone from February 15 to 17, 2026, organized by the Roccalandia association with the Municipality. Due to bad weather, some events were moved to the municipal gym.
Even in its indoor version, the event confirmed its family-oriented nature: children were the stars, but with fun for everyone, in the spirit of joy and lightheartedness typical of the Nebrodi Carnival.
Capri Leone is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Messina, near Capo d'Orlando. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Brolio-Capo d'Orlando exit) and the SS113 road. The reference train station is Rocca di Capri Leone, on the Messina-Palermo line.
The parades and events take place in the town center and at the municipal gym. In case of bad weather, events may be moved indoors. Admission to the events is generally free.
We recommend wearing a mask or costume to fully participate in the festive atmosphere and checking the updated program on the official channels of the Municipality and the Roccalandia association.
