18th-century Naples comes to life in the village of Caprile, Gragnano, featuring over 300 performers in period costumes.
The Caprile Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas re-enactments in the province of Naples. Every year during the holidays, the hamlet of Caprile, nestled in the hills of Gragnano, Campania, turns into a charming 18th-century Neapolitan village. The entire hamlet becomes a living stage: homes, courtyards, gardens, and narrow alleys host over 300 performers in period costumes, bringing to life a route spanning approximately 10,000 square meters.
Walking through the village alleys, visitors are immersed in the atmosphere of ancient Naples: scenes of daily life unfold within the homes, courtyards, and gardens graciously opened by residents for the occasion. You don't just watch the nativity; you walk through it, which is what makes this experience so much more than a simple costume parade. The setup culminates in the Nativity performance, designed to evoke the same wonder that Saint Francis sought to inspire in Greccio eight hundred years ago. Attention to detail is ensured by the expertise of the C.E.I.C. (Campanian Ethnographic Center), guaranteeing historical and anthropological authenticity.
Along the route, visitors can enjoy free tastings of traditional local food and wine, offered directly within the nativity scenes. It is a perfect way to complete the experience with the genuine flavors of the region, in a village also world-famous for its pasta.
The event dates back to 1960, when the procession of the Pacchiane—women in traditional Campanian folk dress—first took shape in Caprile. In its current form as a living nativity, it has been held since 2012, reaching its twelfth edition in 2025/2026. The organization is managed by the Community of the parishes of San Ciro (Caprile) and Sant'Agnello (Aurano), supported by the Caprile Insieme and Hope in Progress associations, under the patronage of the Municipality of Gragnano. Each year, the Caprile Living Nativity attracts approximately 6,000 visitors from across Campania, becoming one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the province of Naples.
The twelfth edition confirmed the event's great appeal, with over 300 performers in period costumes dedicated to recreating the atmosphere of 18th-century Naples along the alleys and inside the homes of the village of Caprile, in Gragnano.
The route, covering approximately 10,000 square meters, wound through the homes, courtyards, and gardens opened to the public, with the expertise of the C.E.I.C. (Campanian Ethnographic Center) ensuring the authenticity of the settings, and concluded with the traditional Nativity performance. Along the way, visitors were able to enjoy free tastings of traditional local food and wine.
The Living Nativity takes place in the village of Caprile, a hamlet of Gragnano (NA), centered around Piazza Marconi. The scenes are spread throughout the homes, gardens, and alleys of the ancient village.
By car, follow signs for Piazza Marconi. Free parking is available at the A. Roncalli Middle School, from which a free shuttle service runs to the village: in recent editions, shuttles have operated from Piazza Marconi between 4:45 PM and 7:45 PM.
The event takes place in the evening, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is completely free, as are the parking and shuttle service.
The route is explored on foot along the alleys and stairways of the hillside village: comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for winter evenings are recommended. The first hours of opening are generally the least crowded.
