The festival celebrating the joy of reading in the Tuscan Maremma
Capalbio Libri is one of the most beloved literary festivals in Tuscany and a staple of the cultural summer in the town of Capalbio, in the heart of the Maremma in the province of Grosseto. Founded in 2007 by journalist Andrea Zagami, who serves as its artistic director, the festival is promoted by the "Il piacere di leggere" (The pleasure of reading) association under the patronage of the Municipality of Capalbio and the Capalbio Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Tuscany Region.
The program has always woven together non-fiction and fiction, giving space to novels, current affairs books, politics, and economics. The evenings are marked by presentations of new releases, dialogues with authors, and debates that focus on civic passion and discussions on the major issues of the present day. Over the years, the festival has hosted writers, journalists, intellectuals, and key figures in Italian public life, establishing itself as a meeting place for literature and debate.
The 2026 edition, scheduled from August 1st to 8th, marks an important milestone: the twentieth edition. For the occasion, the festival finds a new home in the Teatro del Leccio on Via Giovanni Pascoli, the new open-air amphitheater designed by Dutch architect Maurice Nio and built with the support of the Tuscany Region, destined to become the heart of the cultural season in Capalbio. The poster for the twentieth anniversary is designed by illustrator Jacopo Rosati, who depicts the village as a living organism made of stories, protected by its walls.
Overlooking the hills that slope down to the sea, Capalbio is one of the most charming villages on the Tuscan coast, famous for its medieval walls, the Tarot Garden by Niki de Saint Phalle, and a long tradition of cultural hospitality. During the festival, the town comes alive with readers, writers, and enthusiasts in a setting where literature engages with the landscape and the summer atmosphere of the Maremma.
The 2026 edition of Capalbio Libri celebrates its twentieth edition with an important novelty: the move to the new Teatro del Leccio, the open-air amphitheater built in Capalbio with the support of the Tuscany Region. From August 1st to 8th, the Maremma village will once again be filled with readers and authors for eight days dedicated to literature and discussions on current affairs.
The detailed program, including guests and times for individual meetings, will be announced by the organization in the weeks leading up to the festival. The artistic direction remains in the hands of journalist Andrea Zagami, the creator of the event, while the image for the twentieth anniversary is designed by illustrator Jacopo Rosati. Admission to all events is free.
The meetings are held at the Teatro del Leccio, at Via Giovanni Pascoli 13, in Capalbio (GR), Tuscany.
By car: from the Via Aurelia (SS1) road, you reach Capalbio Scalo, from where you go up to the village. By train: the Capalbio station is on the Rome-Grosseto Tyrrhenian line, connected to the historic center. The nearest airport is Rome-Fiumicino.
Admission to the meetings is free of charge.
