Altrefrontiere: Where Contemporary Dance Meets Maremma

The Altrefrontiere International Dance Festival is a summer intensive for contemporary dance held in Scansano, a charming hilltop village in the province of Grosseto, deep in the Tuscan Maremma. Established in 2019 by DMA Teatrodanza, the festival brings together diverse yet like-minded energies from the international dance scene, offering dancers, performers, and students a space for training, exchange, and creation immersed in nature.

An Intensive Immersed in the Tuscan Landscape

The festival is hosted at Agriturismo Podere Novo 153, in the Ripacci area, just a short distance from Scansano: a peaceful oasis in the Maremma countryside where dance practice harmonizes with the rhythm of nature. For two weeks, participants live an immersive experience consisting of daily classes, community sharing, and research, far from the city noise and in direct contact with the Tuscan territory.

The Program: Classes, Workshops, and Performances

The heart of Altrefrontiere is the training led by internationally acclaimed teachers and choreographers. The program alternates between:

• Technical classes in contemporary dance;
• Improvisation and composition workshops;
• Collective and site-specific performances open to the public;
• Open platforms dedicated to showcasing emerging choreographic projects.

The festival's philosophy is rooted in the exchange of different methodologies and languages: the encounter between diverse approaches to dance becomes an opportunity for growth for all participants.

Friction: The 2026 Edition

The seventh edition, scheduled from July 19th to August 1st, 2026, is dedicated to the theme "Friction": friction, tension, and contrast understood as forces that generate transformation, heat, and rebirth. The program includes approximately 70 hours of training with six international artists, two collective performances, and two open platforms.
