The international classical music festival of the Maremma, nestled in the hills of Morellino di Scansano
The Morellino Classica Festival is the leading classical music event in the Grosseto Maremma and one of the most vibrant concert series in southern Tuscany. Established in 2012 and reaching its 15th edition in 2026, the festival takes place every summer, from June to August, bringing over twenty international-level performances to the most beautiful locations in the Morellino di Scansano territory, within the Municipality of Scansano and neighboring towns in the Province of Grosseto.
The festival is artistically directed by pianist Pietro Bonfilio and organized by the Associazione Culturale La Società della Musica. Its vocation is distinctly international: every year, the program brings together soloists, duos, ensembles, and orchestras from around the world, alternating established names with emerging concert talents. The heart of the festival is the Teatro Castagnoli in Scansano, a historic Italian-style theater, but concerts also spread across a network of evocative locations throughout the Maremma.
A distinctive feature of the Morellino Classica Festival is its choice of venues: music steps out of the theater and into cellars, castles, churches, abbeys, and Etruscan archaeological sites. Recurring stops include the Castello di Potentino in Seggiano, the Cantina dei Vignaioli in Scansano, the church in Montemerano (a hamlet of Manciano), and the Abbazia di San Bruzio in the territory of Magliano in Toscana. A particularly evocative event is the sunrise concert at the Etruscan site of Ghiaccio Forte, where music accompanies the dawn among the ruins.
The link with local food and wine is part of the festival's identity, starting with its very name. Many concerts are accompanied by a tasting of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, the famous red wine that gives the festival its name, offered by local wineries and paired with typical Maremma products. This experience combines the enjoyment of great music with the pleasures of the table and the landscape, in the true spirit of the Maremma.
From the inaugural concert to evenings dedicated to the piano, from chamber recitals to the grand closing lyric gala, the Morellino Classica Festival offers a rich and varied program ranging from Baroque and Romantic repertoires to contemporary music. It is an opportunity to discover the most authentic Maremma, far from mass tourism, accompanied by great music and the hospitality of Scansano and the villages of the Province of Grosseto.
The 2026 edition of the Morellino Classica Festival, the fifteenth, takes place from June 20 to August 23, 2026, between the Teatro Castagnoli in Scansano and the most evocative locations of the Grosseto Maremma. Under the artistic direction of Pietro Bonfilio, the program brings together over twenty events featuring international soloists, duos, ensembles, and orchestras.
The inaugural concert is scheduled for Friday, July 4, at 9:00 PM at the Teatro Castagnoli, featuring violinist Zhen Xu and pianist Pietro Bonfilio. The summer continues with an intense season of recitals, a section dedicated to the piano in August, and the traditional grand closing lyric gala, all accompanied by the tastings of Morellino di Scansano DOCG that have always characterized the festival.
