The dumpling festival in Vigo di Fassa, Val di Fassa
The Canederlo Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in Vigo di Fassa, a village in the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). For one evening, the central Piaz J.B. Massar turns into a genuine open-air tavern: guests pay at the counter, sit at shared tables, and are served by the musicians of the Mùsega da Vich band, while a folk group enlivens the atmosphere with live music.
The canederlo (known as Knödel in German) is one of the iconic dishes of the Dolomite valleys and the Ladin tradition of Val di Fassa. Originally a peasant dish created to avoid wasting stale bread, it is now the star of a festival that celebrates all its savory and sweet variations. The event is conceived and managed by Mùsega da Vich, the Vigo di Fassa band association united under the Vich Events Committee, which blends music and local cuisine into a single convivial evening.

One of the most popular highlights is the children's workshop, which allows the little ones to learn how to prepare dumplings by following the tips of Chef Daniele. Registration is available at the Vigo di Fassa tourist office or directly at the event's cash desk.

The 2026 Canederlo Festival takes place on Thursday, July 16, 2026, starting at 7:30 PM in Piaz J.B. Massar, in Vigo di Fassa (Municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan). The square turns into an open-air tavern managed by the Mùsega da Vich.
The menu features four varieties of dumplings: leek and bacon with cheese fondue, cheese with cabbage salad, spinach with cheese fondue, and sweet dumplings filled with apricot and strawberry, all paired with mountain craft beers. The children's workshop with Chef Daniele is also confirmed.
