Faith, history, and local flavors in the village of Campora, Agerola
The Campora Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Agerola, a village in the Lattari Mountains in the Province of Naples, located in the heart of Campania overlooking the Amalfi Coast. The celebration takes place in the small hamlet of Campora, around the 17th-century church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, now the Parish of San Martino. It is a community festival that unites the deep Marian devotion of the locals with the conviviality of summer evenings, held under the patronage of the Municipality of Agerola.
The event is also known as the General Avitabile Festival, in memory of Paolo Avitabile, born in Agerola in 1791 and buried in the church of Campora. An adventurous figure of the 19th century, after serving in the Bourbon army, he entered the service of the Maharaja of Lahore, becoming a legendary figure in local history. He is also credited with promoting the breeding of the famous Agerola cow, the source of the renowned fiordilatte of the Lattari Mountains. The festival thus weaves faith together with a piece of history that still makes the entire town proud today.
The evening begins at dusk with the opening of the food stalls, continues with live music, and culminates at midnight with a fireworks display that illuminates the rooftops of the village. It follows a simple, authentic rhythm designed for families, residents, and visitors who travel up to Agerola for an evening of good food and tradition.
The delicious heart of the festival lies in the traditional Agerola dishes, prepared with local excellence: zero-mile dairy products like fiordilatte and Provolone del Monaco, mountain vegetables, and recipes from the peasant tradition of the Lattari Mountains. The free-entry stalls allow visitors to savor the authenticity of a land that has made the quality of its products a hallmark of its identity.
Perched at an altitude of about 600 meters in a green basin of the Lattari Mountains, Agerola is known as the starting point of the Path of the Gods and as a natural balcony over the Gulf of Salerno. The Campora Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic soul of this Campanian town, far from the crowds of the coast and immersed in a landscape of woods, pastures, and fresh air.
