About Cairo Medievale

In August, Cairo Montenotte, in the Bormida Valley, travels back in time with Cairo Medievale: five evenings where the historic center transforms into a medieval village. Seventeen taverns, two theaters with daily shows, street artists, fire shows, children's entertainment, and three grand costume parades with over two hundred participants bring the town's streets to life. The event, linked to the patron saint's festival of San Lorenzo, is one of the most evocative historical reenactments in the Savona hinterland.

Cairo Montenotte Returns to the Middle Ages

Cairo Medievale is the grand historical reenactment of Cairo Montenotte, a town in the Bormida Valley in the province of Savona. For five evenings in August, the historic center dresses up for the Middle Ages, transforming into a bustling village with taverns, merchants, artists, and costumed ladies. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Città di Cairo Montenotte.

Taverns, Theaters, and Fire Shows

The village comes alive with 17 taverns where you can taste traditional dishes and drinks, and with two medieval theaters hosting daily shows. Street artists, fire games and shows, and entertainment for children can be found in the streets, creating an immersive atmosphere that recreates the sounds, flavors, and colors of a bygone era.

Costumed Parades

Culminating moments are the three grand historical parades: over two hundred costumed participants parade from Porta Soprana to Piazza della Vittoria, recreating the life of the medieval village with ladies, knights, soldiers, flag bearers, and period crafts. The spectacle attracts numerous visitors from all over Liguria and neighboring Piedmont each year.

San Lorenzo and the Bormida Valley

The event is linked to the patron saint's festival of San Lorenzo, celebrated on August 10th, and is part of the traditional events calendar of the Bormida Valley. Cairo Medievale is now one of the most beloved reenactments in the Savona hinterland, successfully combining historical reconstruction, entertainment, and the promotion of the town's historic center.
