Five evenings of the Middle Ages with taverns, pageants, and fire shows in Val Bormida
Cairo Medievale is the grand historical re-enactment of Cairo Montenotte, a town in the Val Bormida in the province of Savona. For five August evenings, the historic centre dons medieval attire, transforming into a bustling village with taverns, merchants, artists, and ladies in costume. The event is organised by the Pro Loco Città di Cairo Montenotte.
The village comes alive with 17 taverns where you can taste traditional dishes and drinks, and with two medieval theatres hosting daily performances. Street artists, games, and fire shows, and entertainment for children can be found in the streets, creating an immersive atmosphere that recreates the sounds, flavours, and colours of a bygone era.
Culminating moments are the three grand historical pageants: over two hundred costumed participants parade from Porta Soprana to Piazza della Vittoria, recreating the life of the medieval village with ladies, knights, guardsmen, flag-throwers, and period trades. The spectacle attracts numerous visitors every year from all over Liguria and neighbouring Piedmont.
The event is linked to the patronal feast of San Lorenzo, celebrated on August 10th, and is part of the traditional events calendar for the Val Bormida. Cairo Medievale is now one of the most beloved re-enactments in the Savona hinterland, successfully combining historical reconstruction, entertainment, and the promotion of the town's historic centre.
The 2026 edition of Cairo Medievale enlivens the historic centre of Cairo Montenotte from August 6th to 10th, coinciding with the patronal feast of San Lorenzo. Five evenings of shows featuring two medieval theatres, 17 taverns, street artists, fire games, and children's entertainment. Three grand historical pageants with over 200 participants parade from Porta Soprana to Piazza della Vittoria. The event is part of the Ligurian Authentic Events 2026 calendar.
Cairo Montenotte is reached from the Altare (A6 Turin–Savona) motorway exit. It is also served by the railway station on the Savona–San Giuseppe di Cairo line.
The event takes place over five evenings in August. Shows and pageants are in the evening; taverns open for dinner. For admission and details, please refer to the official website and the Pro Loco.
