Five evenings of the Middle Ages with taverns, parades, and fire shows in the Bormida Valley
Cairo Medievale is the grand historical reenactment of Cairo Montenotte, a town in the Bormida Valley in the province of Savona. For five evenings in August, the historic center dresses up for the Middle Ages, transforming into a bustling village with taverns, merchants, artists, and costumed ladies. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Città di Cairo Montenotte.
The village comes alive with 17 taverns where you can taste traditional dishes and drinks, and with two medieval theaters hosting daily shows. Street artists, fire games and shows, and entertainment for children can be found in the streets, creating an immersive atmosphere that recreates the sounds, flavors, and colors of a bygone era.
Culminating moments are the three grand historical parades: over two hundred costumed participants parade from Porta Soprana to Piazza della Vittoria, recreating the life of the medieval village with ladies, knights, soldiers, flag bearers, and period crafts. The spectacle attracts numerous visitors from all over Liguria and neighboring Piedmont each year.
The event is linked to the patron saint's festival of San Lorenzo, celebrated on August 10th, and is part of the traditional events calendar of the Bormida Valley. Cairo Medievale is now one of the most beloved reenactments in the Savona hinterland, successfully combining historical reconstruction, entertainment, and the promotion of the town's historic center.
The 2026 edition of Cairo Medievale enlivens the historic center of Cairo Montenotte from August 6th to 10th, coinciding with the patron saint's festival of San Lorenzo. Five evenings of shows featuring two medieval theaters, 17 taverns, street artists, fire games, and entertainment for children. Three grand historical parades with over 200 participants march from Porta Soprana to Piazza della Vittoria. The event is part of the 2026 Authentic Ligurian Events calendar.
Cairo Montenotte is reached from the Altare (A6 Turin–Savona) highway exit. It is also served by the train station on the Savona–San Giuseppe di Cairo line.
The event takes place over five evenings in August. Shows and parades are in the evening; taverns open for dinner. For admission and details, please refer to the official website and the Pro Loco.
