The parade of decorated wheelbarrows in the Alto Casertano village
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
The Caiazzo Carnival, in the Alto Casertano area, is known throughout the province by an affectionate nickname: the Carriolata, or the "Wheelbarrow Carnival." Its originality lies in an idea as simple as it is brilliant: where big cities parade with massive floats, in Caiazzo the stars are humble wheelbarrows, transformed for the occasion into small, self-propelled works of art. It is a festival that belongs entirely to the local community, from the youngest children to the elderly, and every Carnival season it fills the village streets with joy and popular satire.
The heart of the event is the parade of decorated wheelbarrows. Each group chooses a theme and puts their creativity to work to turn a simple wheelbarrow into a full-fledged miniature float. Themes range from political satire to cartoon characters, as well as fantastic figures and traditional masks from the Campania region. The wheelbarrows are painted, adorned with ribbons and fabrics, or enriched with cardboard and papier-mรขchรฉ sculptures, and are pushed by hand along the route in a competition that is as playful as it is heartfelt. It is the perfect opportunity for those who want to give free rein to their imagination without needing tractors or trailers: all it takes is ingenuity and a desire to have fun.
Lacking a specific mask of its own, Caiazzo borrows the most famous characters from the Campania tradition: Pulcinella, the cunning trickster who symbolizes the art of improvisation, as well as figures like Scaramuccia and Tartaglia. The parade is accompanied by musical groups, street performers, entertainment, and shows designed for children. Don't miss the food stalls featuring local specialties and traditional Carnival sweets: chiacchiere, castagnole, and the traditional pizza in the pan, to be enjoyed between one wheelbarrow float and the next.
The parade crosses the town's iconic landmarks: from the Foro Boario to Piazza Portavenere, winding through the historic center and ending in Piazza Santo Stefano Menecillo. Caiazzo, a village of ancient origins dominated by the Lombard Castle and the Cathedral of the Assumption, offers a picturesque setting that blends popular festivities with the charm of its thousand-year history.
The event has been promoted for years by the Pro Loco "Nino Marcuccio" of Caiazzo, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration. It is a volunteer effort that, edition after edition, has made the Carriolata a fixed appointment not only for the locals but for many visitors from the province of Caserta and the entire Campania region.
More than just a party, the Carriolata represents a symbol of tradition, identity, and belonging for Caiazzo, as well as the right of the youngest to experience the carefree spirit of Carnival. This is why the community cares so deeply about this event, which is one of the most characteristic and beloved in the entire Caserta Carnival calendar.
For the 2026 edition, the traditional Carriolata organized by the Pro Loco did not take place. The local press reported the cancellation of the civic festival, sparking disappointment among part of the citizenry, who are particularly attached to this tradition. The Carnival was still celebrated in a reduced form within the parish, at the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration. Therefore, the classic parade of decorated wheelbarrows through the streets of the historic center did not occur.
Caiazzo is located in the Alto Casertano area, in Campania. By car, it can be reached from the Caserta Nord (A1) motorway exit, continuing inland, or via the SS87 Sannitica road. The nearest train station is Caiazzo, on the line connecting the Volturno Valley.
The event traditionally takes place during the Carnival period, between February and early March, on the weekend before Shrove Tuesday.
Access to the parade and the various activities is free of charge.
