Celebrating the iconic Canavese sausage in Villareggia with guided tastings, local wine, and tradition
The Brut & Brut Festival takes place in Villareggia, a town in the Province of Turin located on the Canavese plains, between the rice paddies and the hills of upper Piedmont. The star of the show is Brut, an ancient, traditional sausage from the Canavese rural culture. Measuring 12 to 20 centimeters and dark brown in color, it is crafted from the less noble parts of the pig—cracklings, tripe, boiled head, and salami paste, enriched with pig's blood—cold-spiced and lightly cooked before being stuffed.
This is no ordinary local product: Brut is officially recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT) of Piedmont and is listed in the Slow Food Ark of Taste, a project dedicated to protecting endangered gastronomic treasures. The festival was created specifically to preserve and promote this humble recipe, a genuine expression of the Canavese tradition of 'cucina di recupero' (nose-to-tail cooking).
Organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Villareggia, the event offers a program designed for all ages, blending fine food, culture, and entertainment:
One of the most popular features is the masterclass "Brut is not a sparkling wine" (a play on the Italian word 'brut'), a journey that guides participants through the perfect pairings between this sausage and Canavese labels. The tasting takes place in the cellar, among amphorae and aging rooms, led by experts and speakers from the Piedmontese wine world.
The Brut & Brut Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Canavese and a specialty that tells the story of Piedmont's rural history. Far from the major tourist crowds, Villareggia welcomes visitors with the warm conviviality typical of village festivals, where the pleasure of dining meets the rediscovery of local traditions.

Booking is recommended for guided tastings and masterclasses, as capacity is limited. For information, contact the Pro Loco of Villareggia (tel. +39 351 547 8256) or visit the official Brut & Brut Festival Facebook page.
Arrive hungry: in addition to the tastings, the stalls offer Brut in its various traditional versions. Bring comfortable shoes if you plan to join the excursions in the surrounding area.
