About Brut & Brut Festival

Every spring, Villareggia—a small town in the Province of Turin, nestled in the heart of the Canavese region—hosts the Brut & Brut Festival. The event celebrates 'Brut', a rustic and flavorful sausage made from pork cracklings, tripe, boiled head, salami paste, and pig's blood. Recognized as one of Piedmont's Traditional Agri-food Products and included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste, this festival features guided tastings, live processing demonstrations, music, and family activities, all centered around this unique local delicacy.

A festival dedicated to an iconic Canavese sausage

The Brut & Brut Festival takes place in Villareggia, a town in the Province of Turin located on the Canavese plains, between the rice paddies and the hills of upper Piedmont. The star of the show is Brut, an ancient, traditional sausage from the Canavese rural culture. Measuring 12 to 20 centimeters and dark brown in color, it is crafted from the less noble parts of the pig—cracklings, tripe, boiled head, and salami paste, enriched with pig's blood—cold-spiced and lightly cooked before being stuffed.

This is no ordinary local product: Brut is officially recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT) of Piedmont and is listed in the Slow Food Ark of Taste, a project dedicated to protecting endangered gastronomic treasures. The festival was created specifically to preserve and promote this humble recipe, a genuine expression of the Canavese tradition of 'cucina di recupero' (nose-to-tail cooking).

What to expect at the festival

Organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Villareggia, the event offers a program designed for all ages, blending fine food, culture, and entertainment:

  • Guided tastings led by ONAS (National Organization of Cured Meat Tasters) to help you identify the unique characteristics and local pairings of Brut.
  • Preparation demonstrations, offering a close-up look at techniques passed down through generations.
  • Musical performances and family activities that bring the town center to life.
  • Pairings with local wines, from Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG to Canavese Nebbiolos, accompanied by dedicated masterclasses.

Brut and wine: a local dialogue

One of the most popular features is the masterclass "Brut is not a sparkling wine" (a play on the Italian word 'brut'), a journey that guides participants through the perfect pairings between this sausage and Canavese labels. The tasting takes place in the cellar, among amphorae and aging rooms, led by experts and speakers from the Piedmontese wine world.

Why it's worth a visit

The Brut & Brut Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Canavese and a specialty that tells the story of Piedmont's rural history. Far from the major tourist crowds, Villareggia welcomes visitors with the warm conviviality typical of village festivals, where the pleasure of dining meets the rediscovery of local traditions.
