On Epiphany Day, January 6th, the historic center of Portoferraio comes alive for one of the most cherished traditions of the entire Elba Island community. The festival, dedicated to the Befana, attracts numerous children and families every year who fill the streets and squares of the Elban capital, in the heart of the province of Livorno, Tuscany.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the descent of the Befana from the roof of the Town Hall: with the help of the Fire Brigade, the friendly old lady rappels down to the small square of Giovanni Ageno below, putting on a show that earns applause and enchanted gazes every year. The maneuver, performed by the fire department staff with the support of volunteers, is the hallmark of this festival and its iconic image.
The day unfolds in the historic center, between the Linguella area and Piazza Cavour, with the participation of firefighters and archers, featuring good-luck rituals and the symbolic bonfire that gives the event its name. After the descent, the Befana leads the children to the Sala della Gran Guardia, where fairy tales are read by the Pro Loco. There is no shortage of music, street entertainment, sweets, and small gifts distributed to the little ones.
Promoted by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco of Portoferraio, the festival is one of the events that close the Christmas period on the island. It is a popular, free event designed for families, combining the spirit of the Epiphany tradition with the unique scenery of the Medici historic center of Portoferraio, overlooking the sea.
The January 6th event is also an opportunity to experience the Municipality of Portoferraio during the winter season, away from the large summer tourist crowds. The setting of the historic center, with its Medici fortresses and alleys sloping down toward the harbor, provides the backdrop for a simple and authentic celebration that engages residents and visitors in an atmosphere of shared joy.
The 2026 Befana festival was planned for the afternoon of Tuesday, January 6th, starting at 3:30 PM, in the historic center of Portoferraio. The program included the spectacular descent of the Befana from the roof of the Town Hall thanks to the Fire Brigade, the children's party in Piazzetta Giovanni Ageno, and fairy tale readings in the Sala della Gran Guardia organized by the Pro Loco.
However, due to the rain, the safety requirements for the descent maneuver were not met, and the entire event was canceled, with the appointment postponed to the following year. The organization was entrusted to the Municipal Administration of Portoferraio with the Pro Loco and the Fire Brigade.
Planned program (subsequently canceled due to bad weather):
January 6th, Epiphany Day, starting in the afternoon (approximately from 3:30 PM).
Historic center of Portoferraio (LI): the descent of the Befana takes place at the Town Hall and the small square of Giovanni Ageno; activities continue between Linguella, Piazza Cavour, and the Sala della Gran Guardia.
Portoferraio is the main port of Elba Island, connected to Piombino by ferries (about an hour's crossing). The most frequent connections depart from Piombino Marittima. By car, you can reach Piombino via the SS398 and the Aurelia (SS1); the reference train station on the mainland is Campiglia Marittima/Piombino.
The event takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free to attend.
